Iranian president’s funeral
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, the country’s foreign minister and others were found dead Monday at the site of a helicopter crash after an hours-long search through a foggy, mountainous region of the country’s northwest, state media reported.
According to the Iranian news outlet Tasnim, which is affiliated to the country’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps, Raisi and other victims’ funeral will be held today in Tabriz - the city he was travelling to on Sunday.
The bodies will be taken to a forensics department in Tabriz beforehand.
Indian national to reappear before Canadian court in Nijjar’s murder case
An Indian national charged in connection with the killing of a Khalistani separatist appeared before a Canadian court, which ordered him to re-appear on Tuesday alongside three co-accused arrested in the high-profile case that has severely strained India’s relations with Canada.

Charges to be framed against BJP’s Brij Bhushan Singh
A Delhi court will frame charges against ex-WFI chief Brij Bhushan Singh in sexual harassment case.
The case was filed by six female wrestlers.
Singh has also been charged with the offence of outraging the modesty of woman.
The Delhi police chargesheet filed against Singh and second accused Vinod Tomar stated that both the accused are chargesheeted for trial ‘without arrest’ as they have complied with the directions under section 41A CrPC by joining the investigation.
It further stated that based on the investigation so far, Singh was “liable to be prosecuted and punished for offences” of sexual harassment, molestation and stalking.
CBI to submit chargesheet in Bengal coal smuggling case
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which initiated its probe in 2020, is expected to submit the chargesheet in the Bengal coal smuggling case on Tuesday.
The alleged scam involves mines located in the Kunustoria and Kajora areas in and around Asansol, West Bengal.
In connection with the alleged scam, four individuals, including Gurupada Majhi, believed to be Anup Majhi associate, were previously arrested.
While the other three have been granted bail, Gurupada remains incarcerated in Tihar jail.
Red alert in Kerala
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday issued a red alert for four districts in Kerala – Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, and Alappuzha – forecasting extremely heavy rainfall until Tuesday.
As heavy rains pose potential hazards, the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has advised people to remain vigilant.
With expectations of heavy rainfall within a short timeframe, there’s a risk of flash floods and urban waterlogging, particularly in low-lying areas.
Landslides may also be triggered by prolonged rainfall.
WFI to decide on Paris Games selection criteria
The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) will decide on 21 May the selection criteria to pick the Indian team for the Paris Olympics, it has been learnt from reliable sources.
India has earned six quota places for the Summer Games, with five of them coming from women wrestlers. Aman Sehrawat is the lone male wrestler to lock quota in the men’s freestyle 57 kilogrammes category.
The WFI had said that it would conduct one final trial to select the wrestlers who will represent the country at the Paris Games, starting 26 July.
Strike action to hit Paris airports and trains
Four major transport union strikes are expected to disrupt travel by air and rail in Paris on Tuesday.
The strikes are a result of the unions’ demand on the government to provide a better compensation package for the Olympic Games.
Many employees of the Aeroports de Paris (ADP) and the SNCF train company are anticipated to observe the one-day strike.

Menstruation festival in 11 countries
Maasika Mahotsav, a week-long festival that aims to destigmatise periods through sports, arts and cultural programmes, will be celebrated today in 11 countries.
As many as 33 organisations will be involved in celebrating the 8th edition of the festival through programmes in 15 states in the country.
The festival aims to challenge menstrual taboos, eradicate period poverty and spark meaningful conversations about periods around the globe, Thane-based NGO Muse Foundation said in a release.
US treasury secy Janet Yellen to receive honorary doctorate in Germany
US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen is visiting Germany’s Frankfurt today, where she will be receiving an honorary doctorate from the Frankfurt School of Finance and Management and deliver remarks on the importance of the transatlantic alliance.
She also will meet with leaders of European banks to discuss macroeconomic issues and efforts to combat illicit financing, including for Russia.
During her visit, Yellen will also push fellow G7 finance officials this five-day visit this week to agree to a plan to bring forward the interest earnings on frozen Russian assets to provide more money to Ukraine quickly.
