Modi to inaugurate Chenab Bridge
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Chenab Rail Bridge in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday. This will mark a major milestone in India’s railway infrastructure as it is the tallest railway arch bridge in the world.
A testament to modern engineering, the Chenab Rail Bridge impressively spans 359 metres above the Chenab River, surpassing the height of the Eiffel Tower. This vital component of the 272-km Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project is poised to revolutionise connectivity, enabling a seamless rail journey from Udhampur to Baramulla and making the Kashmir Valley accessible by train for the very first time upon its completion.
The Rs 43,780 crore project has been described as a strategic and social connector. By linking the Kashmir Valley with the Indian Railways network, the government hopes to boost tourism, create jobs and accelerate the movement of goods and people in and out of the region.
RBI to announce repo rate
The Reserve Bank of India is set to announce the repo rate. Earlier, the RBI reduced the key interest rate (repo) by 25 bps each in February and April, bringing it to 6 per cent.
The results are being announced after the RBI’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) met for three days. The rates are being announced at a time when inflation in the country has been steadily declining. India’s retail inflation eased to 3.16 per cent in April, down from 3.34 per cent in March, according to official data released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.
With inflation now below the 4 per cent mark, the MPC is expected to take this into account while deciding the policy stance.
