Bihar election results
The results of the Bihar Assembly elections will be announced today. The counting of votes will begin at 8 am on Friday. The party will be required to acquire 122 seats out of 243 total seats to form a government.
The Mahagathbandhan, a coalition comprising the Congress, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Left parties and others, is challenging the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), made up of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Janata Dal (United), Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) or LJP-RV, Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) and Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM).
The election, which was held in two phases on November 6 and November 11, saw a historic high overall voter turnout of 66.91 per cent. Some of the hottest seats in the fray are Tarapur, Raghopur, Mahua, Mokama and Alinagar, to name a few.
Resident doctors in England to go on strike for five days
Resident doctors in England will begin an unprecedented five-day strike today, demanding appropriate pay and working conditions. The walkout is being organised by the British Medical Association (BMA), will last until 7 am on November 19 and is expected to cause significant disruption to the NHS as it heads into a challenging winter period.
The strike is the 13th since March 2023 and follows the recent breakdown of talks after the BMA rejected the Health Secretary Wes Streeting’s latest offer, which included covering the cost of mandatory exams and expanding training places, but no increase on the current year’s pay award. The BMA argues that resident doctors have experienced a real-terms pay erosion of approximately 20 per cent since 2008 and is demanding full pay restoration.
German Defence Minister to host Group of Five (GoF) meeting
Germany’s Defence Minister Boris Pistorius is set to host his counterparts from France, the UK, Italy, and Poland for a meeting of the informal Group of Five defence ministers in Berlin on November 14. The meeting will mark the one-year anniversary of the format, which was initiated by Pistorius himself.
The primary focus of the meeting is to discuss ongoing security challenges in Europe and further support for Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression. The ministers are expected to address the overall security situation and explore ways the E5 countries can coordinate their efforts to respond to current threats.
Children’s Day celebrations
India will celebrate Children’s Day across the country. This day marks the 136th birth anniversary of the nation’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.
Schools across the country will hold fun-filled days for students, featuring cultural programmes, fancy dress competitions, sports days, and talent shows. Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) will be hosting special initiatives for underprivileged children, including meal drives, gift distribution, and medical camps, ensuring the day’s spirit of inclusion reaches everyone.
India v South Africa 1st Test
The first Test match between India and South Africa will begin today at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The match will be part of the Freedom Trophy series. This is the first Test match held at the venue in six years.
Led by Shubman Gill, the Indian team will come in with strong form after sweeping the West Indies 2-0 at home. They also have a bolstered side with the return of wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant from injury. Meanwhile, the South African team, captained by Temba Bavuma, will face a tough challenge on Indian soil, where they have historically struggled.
