Hurricanes are strengthening, the glaciers are melting, and the oceans are warming. Climate change is making the Earth a little less livable with each passing year. The warning signs are not to be ignored, and the United Nations is stressing it yet again.
Humanity has failed to limit global heating to 1.5°C, warned UN General Secretary Antonio Guterres during an interview on Tuesday. He further stated that the world must “change course” immediately.
In an interview ahead of next month’s COP30 conference, the UN chief said that it was now “inevitable” that humanity will overshoot the target set in the 2015 Paris Agreement, which may have “devastating consequences” for the world.
But what is the 1.5°Celsius limit? The 2015 Paris Agreement, a legally binding international treaty, set a target to limit surface temperature to well below 2°Celsius, preferably to 1.5 °C, compared to pre-industrial levels. The treaty is adopted by 196 parties. So what happens if the world exceeds this limit?
