India’s Vice President-designate, CP Radhakrishnan, will be sworn in today. President Droupadi Murmu will administer the oath to him.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend a conference where findings on efforts to decode the Harappan script will be shared.

Russia and Belarus will begin joint military exercises today, called “Zapad 2025” or “West 2025”.

Ekrem Imamoglu, former mayor of Istanbul and the opposition’s leading presidential hopeful, will go on trial today on charges of forgery.

NDA’s CP Radhakrishnan to take oath as VP

Notably, NDA’s CP Radhakrishnan was elected as the 15th Vice President of India on Tuesday, winning 452 votes against Opposition candidate and former Supreme Court judge B Sudershan Reddy, who got 300 votes.

Rajya Sabha Secretary General and Returning Officer PC Mody said 767 MPs out of 781 cast their votes, recording a turnout of 98.2%. He said 752 votes were valid while 15 were invalid, which brought down the required majority of first preference votes to 377.

PM Modi to attend conference on decoding Harappan script

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend a conference organised by the Union Ministry of Culture, where research papers will be presented on efforts to decode the Harappan script.

The script has remained a mystery to historians since the ruins of the ancient civilisation were found in Harappa and Mohenjo Daro in the early 1920s.

According to The Indian Express, the papers to be presented draw different conclusions. Some suggest the script is rooted in Sanskrit, others say it is a Dravidian language, and some link it to tribal languages like Santali and Gondi.

The event is being held from September 11 to 13 at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. It is the first Gyan Bharatam International Conference, themed ‘Reclaiming India’s Knowledge Legacy through Manuscript Heritage’.

Indian Navy to commission INS Aravali in Gurugram

The Indian Navy will commission INS Aravali at Gurugram in the presence of Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff today.

INS Aravali, deriving its name from the unwavering Aravali range, shall support various information and communication centres of the Indian Navy which are key to India’s and Indian Navy’s command, control and Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) framework.

Guided by the motto ‘Maritime Security through Collaboration’, the naval base exemplifies supportive and collaborative ethos, working seamlessly with naval units, MDA centres and allied stakeholders.

The Crest of the base comprises the central mountain imagery perfectly symbolising the unwavering and strong Aravali Range, and the rising sun representing eternal vigilance, resilience and energy, in addition to the dawn of niche technological capabilities in the field of communications and MDA. Thus, the crest embodies the steadfast commitment of the Base to facilitate eternal vigilance in order to defend India’s maritime interests.

‘Zapad 2025’: Russia, Belarus hold joint military drills

Russia and Belarus will begun joint military exercises called “Zapad 2025” or “West 2025” today, which will run until September 16.

According to official reports, troops from both countries will simulate repelling attacks, including airstrikes and acts of sabotage.

The drills aim to highlight the close ties between Moscow and Minsk and display Russia’s military strength as its war in neighbouring Ukraine enters its fourth year.

Trial opens against Istanbul mayor Ekrem Imamoglu

Ekrem Imamoglu, the former mayor of Istanbul and the opposition’s leading presidential hopeful, has been in Silivri high-security prison since March.

The 54-year-old rival of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan faces several charges, including defamation and corruption.

Imamoglu is set to go on trial today on charges of forgery. Though the allegation may appear minor, a conviction could carry serious consequences.

The most serious outcome would be a ban on his political activities, including contesting the next presidential elections.

Apple iPhone 17 pre-orders in India to begin

Apple launched its new iPhone 17 series, including its thinnest iPhone yet, at its annual event on September 9.

Pre-orders for the iPhone 17 will open in India today, with sales starting on September 19.

Pre-orders for the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max will also begin today, and they too will go on sale from September 19.

As seen every year, the four new iPhone 17 models feature better cameras and stronger batteries than the previous versions.
