With the world feeling more chaotic than ever, it’s no surprise that self-care trends are shifting towards comfort, stillness, and creating a personal space. People are craving warmth, both physically and emotionally, and this is where this latest TikTok trend comes to the rescue.
Cosy maximising or cosymaxxing is the newest buzz on social media that encourages one to embrace the simple joy of feeling at ease in your own space. Whether it’s wrapping up in a blanket, lighting candles, or just sinking into your favourite spot at home, this trend encourages slowing down and creating your own menu of comfort.
But where did this trend come from, and why should you try it? Let’s dive in.
Where did cosymaxxing come from?
The idea of embracing coziness isn’t exactly new. This social media movement, which took off on TikTok and Instagram, is essentially a fresh take on the Danish concept of ‘hygge’, which describes a “cozy, contented mood evoked by comfort and conviviality.”
While cosymaxxing shares similarities with hygge, there’s a key difference.
Unlike hygge, which often highlights the joy of warmth and togetherness with loved ones, cosymaxxing is a more personal experience. It focuses on creating an atmosphere of comfort specifically for yourself, whether that’s through self-soothing rituals, solo relaxation, or simply indulging in moments of stillness.
Amanda White, a licensed professional counselor and owner of the Therapy for Women Center, sees cosymaxxing as a “mindful rebellion”.
“Cosymaxxing is such a cool trend because it represents a mindful rebellion against hustle culture and a return to intentional comfort-seeking,” she told Well and Good.

What are the benefits of cosymaxxing?
Mental health experts agree that cosymaxxing is more than just a way to unwind—it can help regulate sleep patterns, promote relaxation, and bring a sense of peace into daily life.
According to Healthline, creating a comfortable environment activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which counteracts the fight-or-flight response and lowers cortisol levels, thereby helping you reduce stress and anxiety.
“You see, making your environment comfortable can help you feel like you have control over something. You can’t control a lot of the stresses that are going on around you in your life or in the world, but we can control our environment to a point,” licensed mental health counselor, Amber Kinney, LMHC told Well and Good. “[Cosymaxxing] just helps people feel like they’re doing something that they can focus their energy on.”
Beyond stress relief, cosymaxxing can also support emotional regulation. Taking time to consciously relax allows for self-reflection and helps manage emotions without relying on external validation.
Another major benefit is better sleep quality. Creating a cozy, clutter-free space can make it easier to wind down at night, leading to more restful sleep.
“Creating a comforting space is great for stress relief and can even improve sleep because a clutter-free, inviting space makes it easier for you to wind down and get quality rest, which is key for emotional balance,” Ken Fierheller, a registered psychotherapist at One Life Counselling & Coaching, told Healthline.
How to cosy maxx?
Embracing cozymaxxing involves curating an environment that appeals to your senses and promotes relaxation. Here are some suggestions to get started:
Create ambient lighting: Replace harsh overhead lights with softer alternatives like table lamps, string lights, or candles to cultivate a warm atmosphere.
Incorporate soothing scents: Use candles, essential oils, or incense with calming fragrances such as lavender, vanilla, or cedarwood to enhance the sensory experience.
Surround yourself with comfy blankets: Utilise plush blankets, fluffy pillows, and cosy pajamas to maximise physical comfort.
Engage in relaxing activities: Indulge in hobbies that bring you joy, such as reading, journaling, knitting, or painting.
Limit digital distractions: Set boundaries with electronic devices to fully immerse yourself in the cosy environment and reduce overstimulation.
Enjoy comforting foods and beverages: Sip on herbal teas or warm drinks and savour your favorite comfort foods in moderation.
Remember, there are no strict rules to cosymaxxing. The goal is to create a personalised retreat that allows you to decompress and find solace in the space around you.
