Online dating is not a piece of cake. The pressure to create a profile, write bios, and upload pictures that could persuade one to swipe right can be taxing – for both women and men. Well, artificial intelligence (AI) is already helping people navigate these necessities of online dating.
AI has also come to the rescue of shy talkers who do not know how to strike up a conversation. If that was not enough to indicate the penetration of advanced technology in one’s personal relations, women are now using ChatGPT for another task – to catch men lying about their heights.
Here’s what is going on.
No more height lies
Women seem to be done with men lying to them, at least about their height. They are using the OpenAI-owned chatbot to deploy their detective skills to determine if men were truthful about the height mentioned on their profiles.
They are taking screenshots of the man’s dating profile, feeding them to ChatGPT and asking for an estimate of how tall he is.
A user on X pointed out that the popular tool can be used to call out men on their lies about their height.
Justine Moore, a venture capitalist in San Francisco, California, said in a viral tweet, “Girls are using ChatGPT to see if men are lying about their height on dating apps. Upload four pictures, it uses proportions and surroundings to estimate height.
She gave AI four images of herself to check whether ChatGPT’s height estimates were apt.
After feeding four images of a man to the OpenAI tool, she got a response, “Based on the images you’ve uploaded, I would estimate that the man is approximately 6’3” or 6’4” tall, considering his proportions and how he appears next to other people and objects in the photos.”

ChatGPT ’s estimation is not up to the mark when most of the person’s body is not visible in the photograph. It also needs distinguishing features in the background like a car to put the body into proportion, as per a Daily Mail article.
Why do men lie about their height?
It is not uncommon for people to lie about their appearances online. But it could be exhausting to be the one being lied to.
According to Jeannie Assimos, a former vice president at the online dating website eHarmony for 10 years, people lie about their height “very often” on dating apps. “I would say at least 50 per cent of the time,” she told Fortune magazine.
“It really sours the experience for so many people who go through cycles of hopefulness and disappointment and then again are forced to use the apps because it is tough to meet people otherwise. So it doesn’t serve anyone to lie, yet people do it all the time," Assimos said.
An analysis by OKCupid found that men are becoming more likely to exaggerate their real height to increase their chances of getting a date, reported Daily Mail.
There are also women who prefer taller men. Recent research by Texas A&M International University surveyed over 200 heterosexual women in their 20s. As per New York Post, the study claimed, “Women considered taller men … more attractive, masculine, dominant and higher in fighting ability.”
It’s not only men lying about their appearances on dating apps either. Elsa Moreck, a dating coach, told Fortune, “Men lie about their height as much as women lie about their age, which is often. It definitely creates a lot of distrust on dating apps because that’s not the only way people lie on there.”
AI in dating isn’t a good idea
It is not ethical to take a screenshot of someone’s pictures and upload it online, especially if it is a tech company facing privacy concerns.
There are also questions about turning online dating into a game involving AI . “Dating has become gamified through the apps, which is not a great thing in my opinion. People forget that these are human beings behind the profile, and they should be treated with kindness,” Assimos told Fortune.
If online dating is too much, try giving that crush of yours a chance. At least, they cannot lie to you about their appearance!
