ChatGPT helps Russian man match with over 5,000 women on Tinder: Can AI help us find love?

Can Artificial Intelligence (AI) help us find love? While some may answer in the affirmative, others are unlikely to be that optimistic about relying on technology to find a potential partner. The use of AI in dating apps is not new. With OpenAI’s ChatGPT, the realm of wooing someone using chatbots has increased. Now, a Russian man has claimed he used a Tinder bot – powered by ChatGPT – to help him choose the love of his life. Let’s take a closer look. Russian man uses ChatGPT to find love The man, identified as Alexander Zhadan, said in a long post on X that he met about 5,239 women using the Tinder bot before proposing to the one he liked – his now wife, Karina. He said the bot would fix six dates for him in a day. According to Zhadan, he created several ChatGPT bot variations, honing them over time. He said he stopped using the bot after meeting Karina, reported NDTV. Zhadan claimed the bot scheduled dates for him, had “small talks” with women, and also eliminated unfit matches. The 23-year-old said he installed filters that identified women with whom he could continue communication. As per News18, Zhadan said the bot suggested him locations for dates and what to say in situations.

“I gave ChatGPT information about how I communicate. At first, there were problems because the program didn’t know me, it could write some kind of nonsense, but later I trained it to such an extent that it began to interact with girls like me,” Zhadan told Russian news agency RIA Novosti. Use of AI in dating Online dating can be tough. Sometimes, people are unsure of how to start a conversation or even make their profiles. Here comes generative AI, which is not only being used by daters to write their profile bios but to even chat with their matches. KJ Dhaliwal, Chief Strategy Officer of Social Discovery Group, a company that creates AI technologies for dating, gaming, and entertainment websites, told Business Insider that tools like ChatGPT can be “harnessed to assist hopeful daters”. A spokesperson from CupidBot, an AI-based dating app, told the New York Post earlier that the software helped one employee get 13 dates in just a month. Last July, a survey by Attractiontruth, an AI dating coach, found that about 20 per cent of 1,371 men, between the 25 to 35 age groups, are using tools like ChatGPT to develop their dating app profile bios, and curate “tailored” and “captivating” messages. Another previous study by cybersecurity firm Kaspersky and Inner Circle that surveyed single men and women in the United Kingdom found that most single adults are willing to adopt ChatGPT to help them in online conversations. However, just 37 per cent said they would like to use the chatbot to enhance their profiles, reported The Guardian. Pixabay (Representational Image)[/caption] Dating apps, including Tinder , have been experimenting with AI for some time now. Tinder has been using the technology for “matching algorithms, merchandising, and trust and safety efforts” since 2019. Reports surfaced last year that the popular dating site was planning to deploy AI to assist users in selecting five images from their photo albums that best represent them. OkCupid announced last year that it will introduce new AI-written matching questions throughout the year. Teaser AI enables the users to chat with an AI version of a potential match before swiping right or left. Relationship app Flamme has an AI-powered “Ask Me Anything” tool for users seeking dating advice. Relationship expert Michelle Devani told Lifewire in an email previously, “AI reveals high-potential matches that result in a great opportunity to find love. The more it is used, the more accurate the matches are. Also, AI helps users improve their profiles by giving suggestions on creating an interesting profile, thus quickly catching attention.” Downsides of using AI for dating Using technology to chat with matches raises ethical questions. How would the other person feel if they got to know you were using a chatbot to send them those lovey-dovey messages? Will it be considered lying if you do not reveal that your texts are AI-generated? What if the other person was doing the same? There are also concerns that generative AI tools can be used by catfishers and scammers to deceive people. One example of this is LoveGPT which combined ChatGPT with the existing technology to create fake profiles on several dating platforms. However, it is not easy to keep up appearances for long or fake confidence using AI chatbots. As The Conversation noted, “A performance of confidence through ChatGPT cannot be maintained for long anyway. Once it wears thin and questions become more personal, people have to fall back on their ability to communicate sensitively, take risks, and slowly build trust.” With inputs from agencies
