The Assembly election results for four states are out, while the counting of votes is underway for Mizoram on Monday (4 December). The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won all three states in the Hindi heartland – Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, while the Congress found solace in the southern state of Telangana. While most of the bigwigs fielded by the political parties in the fray were successful in bagging their seats, some sitting legislators, including the incumbent Madhya Pradesh home minister Narottam Mishra, failed to mark a victory. We explain. Assembly Election Results: MPs in the fray As many as 21 sitting MPs from the BJP contested Assembly elections in the four states that voted last month. Those MPs who won in the Assembly elections have to make a choice now – Parliament or Vidhan Sabha. They have to choose which seat they will keep within the next 14 days. “If they don’t, on expiry of 14 days, they will lose their membership of Parliament. However, they can continue as member of the state Legislative Assembly,” Constitution expert and former Lok Sabha secretary general PDT Achari told PTI, citing the Prevention of Simultaneous Membership Rule issued by the President in 1950 under Article 101 of the Constitution. As per TOI, all three MPs of the Congress, who won the Telangana Assembly election, are likely to retain their Assembly seats and resign from their Lok Sabha membership. It remains to be seen what other MPs will do. With inputs from agencies
