Rekha tied the knot with businessman Mukesh Aggarwal on March 4, 1990, but he soon died by suicide as he was dealing with mental health issues. After the unfortunate incident, the diva was labelled as a ’national vamp’ and filmmaker Subhash Ghai and actor Anupam Kher agreed to the term. Ghai once said, ““Rekha has put such a blot on the face of the film industry that it’ll be difficult to wash it away easily”.
Anupam Kher was also quoted back in the day saying, “She’s become the national vamp. Professionally and personally, I think it’s curtains for her. I mean, I don’t know how I will react if I come face to face with her.”
Rekha on her husband’s death by suicide
On Rendezvous with Simi Garewal, the actress revealed, “A stage came in our relationship when both of us decided that our incompatibility was too much to overcome."
Rekha added, “The initial shock and then denial… and later on, this intense anger and then you go on this self pity trip… then trying to understand it, in vain… and then, finally, of course, acceptance.”
Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha have starred together in many memorable films in their illustrious careers. The diva has always been candid about her love for her Silsila co-star and one interview with Simi Garewal on her show Rendezvous with Simi Garewal was no exception.
When asked if she was ever in love with Amitabh Bachchan , Rekha replied, “Absolutely. Duh, that’s a dumb question. I have yet to come across a single man, woman, child who can help but fall completely, passionately, insanely, desperately, hopelessly in love with him. So why should I be singled out? What do I deny? I’m not in love with him? Of course I am. Duniya bhar ka love aap le lijiyega and add some more – I feel that for that person. Bottomline.”
