As the heart-stopping, pulse-thrumming ride that was Westworld season 1 neared its end, we had a race of AI beings, newly sentient of what was being done to them in the name of entertainment by humans, rebelling against their former ‘masters’. To catch up with all the happenings of that glorious first season, you may want to read our very comprehensive review here . Suffice it to say that the androids were very, very mad after they discovered the full extent of the violence that had been perpetrated on them by human visitors to the amusement park (where the androids were the primary attraction). Meanwhile, there was park founder Dr Ford’s (the superior Anthony Hopkins) second-in-command, Bernard (Jeffrey Wright) — unaware that he too is an android. And there was the Man In Black (Ed Harris), who were later discovered was none other than Dolores’ onetime sweetheart William. Well, the gang is back — all except Dr Ford, who was shot dead by Dolores at the end of season 1. And they’re baying for human blood, as a new trailer for Westworld season 2 released recently by HBO reveals. (Side note: the music by Ramin Djawadi is as always, a delight; this time featuring a piano cover of Nirvana’s “Heart-Shaped Box”.) “Here we are, a kind that will never know death. And yet, we’re fighting to live,” Dolores tells Bernard, as we see visuals of a full-scale android mutiny in Westworld. Teddy meanwhile, is concerned about the massacre of the humans — never mind that he himself was frequently the subject of men’s target practice in his previous non-sentient state. He points out that all they’ve seen for miles in the park, is blood, and asks Dolores if this is what she really wants. (The answer seems to be yes, but considering we see Dolores seemingly out of the park’s envrions in the latter half of the trailer and in the “real world”, whatever that may be, it seems she wants a whole lot more.) Maeve meanwhile, is on a dual quest: to find her “daughter” (or the android who was programmed to be her child when Maeve occupied a different storyline and avatar), and to guide her fellow androids towards a more studied/better response against the humans than mass slaughter. And then there’s the chilling threat of the Man in Black who wishes to “burn it all to the ground”. Does he mean Westworld? Other questions: Will we see all the created “worlds”, other than Westworld? Will Bernard discover that he too is an android? All we know is what Dolores has to say to Bernard: “There is beauty in what we are.” There is beauty in Westworld. Westworld season premieres on 22 April 2018 on HBO.
