Watch: The ‘plain crazy’ ‘Suicide Squad’ trailer has you rooting for these maverick supervillains
One would probably expect a darker, more twisted trailer for a film about a bunch of crackpot villains coming together to 'save' the world but Suicide Squad's trailer comes as a surprise, and a kickass one at that.
When a trailer starts with Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, you can expect it to be as mercurial and maverick and as the song.
And maverick is probably the best way to describe first official trailer for Suicide Squad, six months after the first look was released at Comic Con (Or maybe the word is batsh*t insane, either way no complaints.)
One would probably expect a darker, more twisted trailer for a film about a bunch of crackpot villains coming together to 'save' the world but Suicide Squad's trailer comes as a surprise, and an awesome one at that.
It is upbeat (like the background score), it is funny and even makes the 'damaged characters' endearing, it is vibrant and it accords the 'villains' a hero's welcome. (It also has tonnes of blasts, ammunition, damaged infrastructure and punches as expected from a superhero film.)
The trailer also (and the teaser image before that) gives us our first proper look at the full squad:
Will Smith as Deadshot, a sharp-shooting assassin, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, the psychologist-turn-psycho, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, the mutant with reptilian strength, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, the witch-possessed human, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, another sharp shot with boomerangs being his preferred weapon, Jay Hernandez El Diablo, a 'human torch' (pun intended), Karen Fukuhara as Katana, the Samurai swordswoman, Adam Beach as Slipknot, an assassin who uses ropes, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg, the unwitting military leader of the group and then there is Joker, played by Jared Leto who is not part of the squad but makes his make in the trailer. The Squad is lead by the hard-as-nails looking Amanda Waller played by Viola Davis who assembles the 'motely crew' which she describes as "task force of the most dangerous people on the planet."

The reaction to this insane trailer can be best summed up by Flagg's quote from the video, "A guy who shoots people, he's a crocodile and he eats people, burns people, you're possessed by a witch and she is plain crazy."
Plain crazy works.
If the star of the film's first look was Leto's joker, it is his partner-in-crime Harley Quinn that steals the show in this trailer. Her simultaneously malevolent yet childlike attitude — think Bubbles from the Powerpuff Girls armed with a rusty chainsaw and a penchant for using it on humans — is superbly portrayed by Margot Robbie. Dear Margot, we now have great expectations from Harley Quinn's first screen incarnation and a feeling that she will fulfil them.
On surface, it appears to be whimsical, which seems in direct contrast to the trailer of the other DC cinema offering of the year, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. But underneath Queen's peppy song and Harley Quinn's antics, there is a darker undercurrent to the film. We see Deadshot being tortured, we see the dark background of Enchantress' possession, El Diablo's angst and then there is more volatility from Quinn and Joker. But then it is a 'Supervillain' film after all, and we cannot wait to see how Ayer takes the 'worst heroes ever' and makes a film that stands out in today's glut of superhero cinema.
If Ayer's offbeat poster for the film - just as flamboyant as Harley Quinn in the trailer - is any indication, Suicide Squad is going to be a hell of a ride.

Suicide Squad will hit theatres in August. Till then watch the trailer here (and watch it on loop because it is just that good.)
