The setting is the same. There’s Shah Rukh Khan, looking as dapper as he always has. There’s Kajol, with her undeniable, charming glow. There are a lot of slow-mo shots; of Shah Rukh staring at (what we assume is) the love of his life, Kajol turning back to look at him (palat) and a host of different seasons: rains for intense romance, the sun for bright romance, and the winds for breezy, sensual romance. Janam Janam from Dilwale is the quintessential Shah Rukh Khan-Kajol song. It even has the word ‘alvida’ in it. [caption id=“attachment_2531976” align=“alignleft” width=“380”] Still from the song. Image from Youtube.[/caption] On his Facebook page, Shah Rukh Khan has admitted that for him, this song is the theme song of Dilwale and we couldn’t agree more. When you rope in a veteran pairing like SRK-Kajol, we don’t want an average song with Windows screen savers. (Move over, Gerua). We want the emotions that make an SRK-Kajol song. The intensity, the emotions, SRK’s hand gestures, Kajol’s smile, the rain and a useless umbrella that has to fly away for dramatic effect. There are many instances in the song that remind us of the veteran pair’s previous songs: A ballroom scene where Kajol is wearing a blue gown, which is reminiscent of ‘Ruk Ja Oh Dil Deewane’ from DDLJ and a black and white scene in the rain that reminds us of the iconic Kuch Kuch Hota Hai scene, are the primary examples. There is some definite overlapping between ‘Gerua’ and ‘Janam Janam’ that can’t be ignored. For one, the opening melody of both songs are quite similar, and so is the use of the piercing blue spotlight in some shots. The VFX in this song is only slightly better than ‘Gerua’. But when you give us Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol in their true elements, you won’t be able to hear anyone complain. Watch the song here:
