Why is it that the most enduring tales of love, are the ones in which it is unfulfilled?

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Mirzya — which marks the debut of Harshvardhan Kapoor (Anil Kapoor’s son, and Sonam Kapoor’s brother) and Saiyami Kher (Tanvi Azmi’s niece) — takes on one of the most iconic tales of star-crossed lovers in India, Mirza-Sahiba, and updates it for a new audience.

The film’s previous teaser, released on 9 June, laid out the bare bones of the narrative: We knew for instance, that Mirzya would show the lead actors, both in a historical setting reenacting the legend of Mirza-Sahiba, and they would also play contemporary characters with a romance similar to their centuries-ago counterparts. There were a few glimpses of Mehra’s gorgeous visuals, although we didn’t see much of Harshvardhan Kapoor’s face, or hear the young actors deliver any dialogues.

The full trailer for Mirzya, unveiled on Thursday, 23 June, evening, introduces us to these new actors more thoroughly. And in these three minutes plus of screen time, they do manage to make an impression.

The trailer begins with Saiyami’s character looking back on her childhood, telling us about her close friend Monish, who would carry her school bag for her and has disappeared in the years since. We see a foreshadowing of Monish’s (Harshvardhan) return as he leads a horse into the palatial mansion where Saiyami lives, and is being wooed by a suitably Prince Charming type.

Of course, love between our original pair is inevitable, and it sparks, despite all the impending objections to it. As the tale hurtles towards its (we imagine inevitable) tragic ending, there are visuals of Harsh and Saiyami in their historical and contemporary avatars.

Will Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra buck the long-accepted norm and his original source material — the tale of Mirza-Sahiba — to give this romance a happy conclusion? You’ll have to wait until this October to find out.
