The trailer of John Abraham’s latest venture, Madras Cafe, is out and the film promises to be a heavy-duty, political action thriller. Directed by Shoojit Sircar, of Vicky Donor fame, the trailer reveals the film is set against the backdrop of Sri Lankan civil war. Sircar’s focus seems to be upon India’s covert operations in the war-struck capital of Jaffna in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka. In fact, the film was initially titled Jaffna, however it was renamed Madras Cafe, which appears repeatedly in the trailer and is obviously the location of a lot of the machinations that lead to the explosive action in the film. Produced by Abraham and Viacom 18, Madras Cafe is set in what feels like a vintage era, thanks to details like journalists using typewriters to file stories and analogue cameras that forced photographers to pick their shots wisely. The real discovery in the trailer of Madras Cafe is that Nargis Fakhri, last seen doing a wonderful imitation of a wooden doll in Rockstar, can actually deliver dialogues fairly convincingly when they are in English. We’re not sure how many war reporters flaunt such a beautiful complexion, but let’s not be nitpicky. Madras Cafe has set for itself the target of being gritty and realistic, if the trailer is any indication. At the start of the trailer, a montage of scenes showing soldiers’ corpses and dead bodies immediately establishes the turbulence in the region. From the conversations, fight sequences and abduction plots, everything in the trailer of Madras Cafe radiates gloom and menace. The film is not for the squeamish. It’s full of violence and we’ll have to see how boldly Sircar deals with the role India played in Sri Lanka’s civil war Watch the trailer here:
