Retired football player David Beckham has left an indelible mark on a lot of his followers through the ink on his body. He has recently shared a video on Facebook in the capacity of a Unicef Goodwill Ambassador, to spread awareness about the societal menace of child abuse. The director of the video has beautifully diffused the animator’s skill with Beckham’s demonstrative tattoos. The narrative effectively shows how child abuse scars the person for life, whether it is in the form of physical abuse, bullying or even being made the laughing stock of peers. Towards the end of the video, the narrative describes how child abuse fuels a vicious cycle as the victim grows up to vents his/her frustration by molesting or abusing others. Having been the target of so many abusive attacks in the childhood, the individual builds a steely exterior around him/herself within which they cease to feel for anyone else, including the opposite gender. Thus, the video establishes a correlation between child abuse and other crimes in society. Beckham makes a huge statement by lending his mind, body and soul to the cause. While the marks on his body are out of choice, not many men enjoy the same luxury. They are scarred by the abuse they were at the receiving end of in childhood. Beckham’s chiseled physique stands in contrast with the helplessness of a victim of child abuse. His contribution to the cause acts as a much-needed symbolic refuge to all the children who have borne the brunt of physical, mental or emotional abuse. It is refreshing to see a dominant football player soften down a bit to make the little ones smile.
