Watch: Benedict Cumberbatch in 'Dr Strange' trailer shows origins of Marvel's most 'magical' superhero
This week has marked a double bonanza for fans of Benedict Cumberbatch. On the one hand, Mark Gatiss — the co-producer of BBC’s Sherlock and its Mycroft Holmes tweeted about the return of everybody’s favourite sociopath detective. Then, on Wednesday morning, the teaser of Marvel’s Dr Strange movie was finally released.
The teaser — which offers a generous two minutes of footage — tells us what we already knew: That this is going to be an origin story for Marvel’s most “magical” character.
The teaser can be divided into two distinct parts. The first juxtaposes Dr Stephen Strange’s life before and after his life-changing car crash. We see him being wheeled into a hospital on a gurney by Rachel McAdams (the actress plays one of Dr Strange’s medical colleagues). We see a flashback: Cumberbatch aka Dr Strange looking suave and prosperous in a black tux, standing against a window. Then we cut to a shot of him standing by the same window, looking scruffy and disheveled.
Another flashback reveals Dr Strange holding up his hands as he’s scrubbed for a surgery. The next scene shows him looking at his damaged hands.
His accident and its consequences established, the teaser leads us to the second part of Dr Strange’s story — how he attains his magical powers. After much travelling, Dr Strange reaches the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton) who tells him, “You’re a man looking at the world through a keyhole, you’ve spent your life trying to widen it…” before adding, “You want to know what I see in your future? Possibility.”
Cue to several Inception-esque, mind-bending presentations of alternate realities and dimensions that prompt Dr Strange to become an eager student of the Ancient One’s brand of magic. And thus, another Marvel superhero is born. And we must say, this avatar of Dr Strange looks a whole lot better than the TV version from the ’70s.
Keep your date with Dr Strange in November 2016. In the meantime, watch the teaser here:
