You don’t see a lot of women-centric films in Bollywood. Most of film makers are happy making films in where either the woman plays a damsel in distress or (drum roll) an item girl. Even if a woman-centric film is made, the issues are often displayed in a melodramatic and teary-eyed way. [caption id=“attachment_2082091” align=“alignleft” width=“380”] Anushka Sharma in NH10. Courtesy: YouTube[/caption] The trailer of Anushka Sharma-starrer NH10 is a brilliant watch because it hints of a film which breaks both these unwanted traditions in Bollywood, and how! In the beginning of the NH10 trailer, Anushka Sharma’s character, all roughed up and in true Ghajini villain style, is seen dragging a metal rod along the road. As the trailer progresses, scenes of a fairy-tale love story between her character and Neil Bhoopalam are shown, after which the trailer cuts back to the roughed-up girl with the rod who mercilessly attacks a man on a scooter with it. It is evident right from the beginning of the trailer that the main aspect of the film will be about the challenges and trauma faced by a woman who is caught in a situation where abuse on women is as commonplace as eating breakfast. And Sharma’s character is not the seedhi saadhi abla naari who is going to take any of it. The story of NH10 is about a woman who turns into an angry badass determined to fight that abuse. Perhaps the best part about the trailer is that film deals with the culture of violence with grit, sans needless emotions and mush. With dialogues like ‘Ye Gurgaon mein jahaan aakhri mall khatam hoti hai na, wahin aapki ye democracy aur constitution bhi khatam ho jaata hai (In Gurgaon, democracy and constitution end where the last mall ends)’, abuses hurled without hesitation and uninhibited violence combined with what looks like good acting from Anushka Sharma, Darshan Kumaar and Neil Bhoopalam, the NH10 seems to be a film worth a watch when it hits the box office.
