Honestly, Dil Dhadakne Do looks like one big party with an ensemble cast. But, that may or may not be a good thing. On the one hand, the film’s trailers and songs have the trademark Zoya Akhtar feel of being a fun film with good looking people, but _Dil Dhadakne Do_ also gives us slight glimpses of the issues and conflicts that the Mehra family faces. But on the other hand, when a film looks too breezy and effortless you have to wonder how much of it was rehearsed and how much was spontaneous. This is the same feeling we get after watching Dil Dhadakne Do’s new song “Pehli Baar”. The song begins with Anushka Sharma and Ranveer Singh in a dance rehearsal studio (or a room with floor length mirrors. Why such a room is on a cruise is another story altogether). [caption id=“attachment_2239970” align=“alignleft” width=“380”] Screen grab from the song.[/caption] It takes mere seconds for Ranveer Singh to turn his swag on. He begins his moves, seemingly to entice Anushka to dance with him. She laughs at him, not mockingly, but in an endearing manner, as if she were saying, “How typically Ranveer!” (we feel the same, Anushka) The lyrics play out like a conversation. “Tumko maine jab dekha tha, sun lo yaar, ki maine kya socha tha (When I first saw you, listen to me, this what I thought about)” It’s almost like the makers told these actors to do whatever they felt like while the song was playing. This Times of India report reveals that we are right. Ranveer and Anushka were given an hour to figure out what they wanted to do with the song, and then “follow their instinct”. This brief came from their director Zoya Akhtar and choreographers Bosco-Caesar. All they were told is that it’s a romantic song, and they need to show chemistry. Now, chemistry is definitely there. Maybe it’s because we know about their past personal life, or maybe it’s because we’ve seen them share a screen before, but together Ranveer and Anushka look good. You are reminded of a young Rose and Jack (Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio) in Titanic who roam around the cruise flaunting their youth and love. They go on to steal navy uniforms from the ship, and go back to the room. “Karna kya bhala, bura, hone do ab jo bhi hoga (whatever we do, good or bad, let things happen on its own)” The video ends with Anushka taking complete charge of the situation, ending with a solitary, romantic moment between the two, as opposed to Ranveer who begun the woo-ing in the beginning of the song_._ What we’re still trying to figure out is why they have to jump around a room and dance? We can’t help but wonder if this move was a budget cut. Was it easier to just have the pair dance around like no one is watching? Yes, they’re falling in love in the film. Yes, they’re mischievous, bordering on spontaneous. But surely there are better ways to portray that? You have natural chemistry, with a good-looking pair who can dance decently well. If it weren’t for Ranveer’s crazy antics and Anushka’s bold charm, the song may not have worked. Watch the trailer here:
