Brad Pitt is back to grace the silver screen.

Pitt's production house, Plan B and Netflix are teaming up for a Netflix original film titled War Machine.

The film is based on the highly controversial book The Operators by Michael Hastings which put the then Joint Special Operations Command in Afghanistan Stanley McChrystal out of a job. Michael Hastings, a war correspondent, spent a month trailing McChrystal and his team in Europe and Afghanistan. What he found was that the General had a blatant disregard for the President, and the was not a fan of the White House war policies. His 2010 exposé in The Rolling Stone about McChrystal titled 'The Runaway General', (which was a prelude to The Operators) made sure that the general was called back to Washington by President Obama and stripped of his merit.

The Hollywood Reporter says that film marks Netflix's highest-budget movie commitment to date — Ted Sarandos (the Chief Content Officer of Netflix) paid a reported premium higher than its $60-million budget because when the online streamer buys all world rights to a property, it’s a flat acquisition.

THR also points to Pitt and director David Michod (Animal Kingdom, The Rover) wanting to make a satirical comedy, not a mainstream, dramatic biopic that would appeal to the U.S. heartland as Clint Eastwood's American Sniper did. A satire on war like War Machine could easily irk conservative audiences, which might not be the right stance for Netflix looking at the current political climate in the US.

The official synopsis states that the film is, "An absurdist war story for our times, writer-director David Michôd recreates U.S. General Glenn McMahon’s roller-coaster rise and fall as part reality, part savage parody – raising the specter of just where the line between them lies today. His is an exploration of a born leader’s ultra-confident march right into the dark heart of folly. At the story’s core is Brad Pitt’s sly take on a successful, charismatic four-star general who leapt in like a rock star to command NATO forces in Afghanistan, only to be taken down by a journalist’s no-holds-barred exposé."

Co-starring with Brad Pitt are stars like Emory Cohen, Topher Grace, Anthony Michael Hall, Will Poulter, Lakeith Stanfield, Meg Tilly, Tilda Swinton, and Sir Ben Kingsley. War Machine will release globally on Netflix on 26 May 2017.

Here's a look at the trailer for War Machine:

As for Pitt, he recently starred in the World War II drama Fury and continues to produce films through his Plan B banner. A little known fact is that Moonlight, the Oscar winning film was also produced by Brad Pitt's Plan B production. In addition to War Machine, the A-lister is preparing for the release of By the Sea, a film in which he co-stars with his wife, Angelina Jolie, who also directed the project. The actor will also return to reprise his role of Gerry Lane in World War Z 2 which is also releasing later this year.
