Vijay in legal trouble: Police complaint filed against Mersal actor for hurting 'Hindu sentiments'

As per TV reports, a police complaint has been filed against Tamil actor Vijay for allegedly hurting ‘Hindu sentiments’ through his latest film, Atlee’s action romance Mersal. Mersal was accused of giving out ‘factually inaccurate’ details of the recently implemented Goods and Services Tax (GST) in the country. The issue got communalised when Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) member H Raja implied that Vijay took an anti-GST stance only because he is a Christian.

Sreedhar Pillai spelled out the BJP’s contention in a Firstpost piece , “One of the characters in the film says that GST in Singapore is just seven per cent and medical treatment is free while in India it is an all time high — 28 percent — and corporate hospitals continue to milk poor patients. The dialogues compare India with Singapore, which also implemented GST, but in a humane manner. The character goes on to say public health in India has failed, and asks if our ‘leaders’ will be treated in government hospitals when they fall sick.” While the producers of the film have offered to delete the scene that has also gone  viral  on the Internet because of the ‘ factual inaccuracies ’ pointed by Tamil Nadu BJP, the reactions have led to a great surge in the demand for tickets.
