Star cast: Ajith Kumar aka Thala Ajith, Trisha Krishnan, Arjun Sarja, Regina Cassandra, Arav and Ramya Subramanian
Director: Magizh Thirumeni
After a gap of 2 years, Ajith Kumar aka Thala Ajith, is back on the big screen with Vidaamuyarchi, a larger-than-life massy-actioner, which is reportedly based on the 1997 American film Breakdown. While the promos and songs have garnered thunderous responses from fans, does it live up to the sky-high expectations of cinegoers? Let’s find out…
Set in Azerbaijan, Arjun (Thala Ajith) and Kayal (Trisha Krishnan) are on the verge of divorce after 12 years of marriage. While Arjun wants to give this relationship a chance, Kayal feels that they both are two different human beings and refuses to change her decision. In the flashback sequences, we see Arjun and Kayal decide to tie the knot only 3 months after meeting each other. The scenes are a mix of beautiful and cute moments along with scenarios which create a rift between them after Kayal’s miscarriage.
Back to the present, Arjun decides to drop Kayal to her parents in Tbilisi, which is a 10-hour drive. However, this road trip turns out to be a horrifying experience for Arjun when he comes to know that Kayal is missing, eventually realising she is kidnapped by Rakshith (Arjun Sarja) and Deepika (Regina Cassandra). How will Arjun save Kayal from Rakshith and Deepika’s nefarious hands? Well, for that you have to watch Vidaamuyarchi in the cinema halls.
While the first half stays true to Breakdown, the second half has been modified to cater to Tamil audiences and Thala Ajith fans. However, the slow-paced narrative and predictability make it a dull affair. The film lacks thrilling moments but the biggest letdown is that it fails to celebrate the aura of Thala Ajith. While director Magizh Thirumeni tries to showcase content over style, he fails to weave a gripping story.
Talking about the technical department, the editing could have been sharper. The fight sequences were strictly average. Om Prakash’s camera work captured the essence of Azerbaijan. Anirudh once again delivered a banger with Sawadeeka while the rest of the songs are blended with the storytelling.
Thala Ajith shows his class act but watching him beaten up more than he is giving back somehow felt disappointing for me especially when you watch an FDFS with his fans. Trisha also gave a fine performance but deserved more screen time, especially in the second half. Arjun Sarja and Regina Cassandra played their role to the T.
On the whole, Vidaamuyarchi is a disappointing affair for ardent Thala Ajith fans as there are no mass moments or the celebration of the heroism of their favourite star
