Tron: Ares had no high points and looked super dragged, especially in the second half

'Tron: Ares' Movie Review: Jared Leto starrer sci-fi actioner is a visual spectacle but lacks depth & emotion

Star cast: Jared Leto, Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, with Gillian Anderson, and Jeff Bridges

Director: Joachim Rønning

The Tron series has been known for its mind-bending sci-fi ideas along with stunning visuals & VFX. The latest instalment, titled Tron: Ares, which is a standalone sequel to Tron: Legacy and the third film in the series, looked spectacular through its promotional assets, but does it fulfil the expectations of  fans? Let’s find out…

The film starts with Eve Kim (Greta Lee) and his sister taking over as the heads of Kevin Flynn’s (Jeff Bridges) Encom, who disappeared before the movie starts. Their firm is in a race with Dillinger Systems to discover a revolutionary AI with a ‘permanence code’ which can change the world.

On the other hand, Ares (Jared Leto) is a super-security program created by Dillinger (Evan Peters). It potentially could be the most dangerous weapon in the world if he exists for more than 29 minutes in the meatspace.

While Eve and Julian are hunting for a solution for ‘permanence’ and the former discovers it, Dillinger goes to any extent to steal from and use it to make his AI warriors and earns trillions of dollars. Will he succeed in his evil mission?

Well, honestly, I went with low expectations for the film and still got disappointed because of its half-baked screenplay, which reminded me of films like Mickey 17 and Enthiran. The film had no high points and looked super dragged, especially in the second half.

Definitely, a thumping BGM and enriching visuals can’t save the film if the narrative is haywire and boring.

Talking about the performances, as mentioned, the BGM and VFX were the biggest highlights, while the acting of the ensemble, including Jared Leto, didn’t live up to the mark.

On the whole, Tron: Ares has scale, visuals and powerful BGM but no storyline and engaging screenplay.
