At a time when calls for a female James Bond are growing, Sony’s SAB TV has come up with an idea for a female spy comedy caper called Trideviyaan. Focusing on the adventures of three spies, who are also sisters-in-law, Trideviyaan looks at how they manage beating up the bad guys with making baingan bharta in the kitchen.

Trideviyaan on SAB TV: These female spies can beat up the bad guys, but not sexism

Oh, and a word on their weapons of choice (at least in the promo material for the show): a whisk, forks and a rolling pin. The trailer and the ad haven’t gone down too well with Twitterati, who wondered if the tag line for the show would be “Mission Impossible: Roti Nation”. The idea of female spies was previously brought to Indian TV in the form of Sony’s C.A.T.S., a desi Charlie’s Angels spin-off. (Side note: Two actresses of that trio would go on later to tragically commit suicide, within a year of each other — Nafisa Joseph and Kuljeet Randhawa.) Of course, when male spies have alter egos, they usually have to settle for being dull businessmen (no offence to businessmen) or other equally sedate jobs: newspaper reporters, photojournalists, millionaires and suchlike. Not one of them has ever had the super exciting role of being a homemaker on the side. So yes, the Trideviyaan will be busy kicking ass soon. It’s a pity they won’t be kicking any sexism.
