Director Alfonso Cuaron’s new film Gravity, starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, has been described as a techno-thriller. If the trailer is anything to go by, then it’s also the stuff of astronaut Chris Hadfield’s nightmares. [caption id=“attachment_1087565” align=“alignleft” width=“380”] Courtesy: Facebook Courtesy: Facebook[/caption] Gravity is about two astronauts who are effectively stranded in space after a disaster hits their mission. Sandra Bullock plays Dr Ryan Stone, a medical engineer on her first space shuttle mission. Accompanying her is George Clooney as astronaut Matt Kowalsky for whom this is his last trip to space. Many have perhaps dreamed of being alone with Clooney, uninterrupted by anyone on earth, but this scenario doesn’t work out too well for Bullock’s character. During a spacewalk, debris from a satellite crashes into the space shuttle and effectively destroys it, leaving Dr Stone floating in space with only Kowalsky’s voice as her anchor. What Dr Stone has before her doesn’t seem to be either as beautiful or serene as Hadfield’s photographs from space , which made him something of a superstar. Cuaron wrote the screenplay of Gravity with his son, Jonas. The film has been a few years in the works. For Bullock’s role, a host of Hollywood leading ladies were considered, including Angelina Jolie, Marion Cotillard and Natalie Portman. If you want a slightly more fun take on gravity, watch astronaut Tom Marshburn getting accustomed to life on earth after spending months in space.
