The trailer for the biopic of Princess of Wales, Diana, directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel is out. According to the producers, the film is a “fictionalised story based on fact”. Mostly focusing on the last two years of Princess Diana’s life, the film trace back to the time after Diana’s divorce with Prince Charles and her alleged relationship with Egyptian business tycoon, Dodi Fayed and their death in a car crash on the fateful night of 31 August 1997. The role of Princess Diana is being played by Naomi Watts.
The teaser trailer has no dialogue, but we see Watts as the the “people’s Princess”. There are several shots of Diana’s petite figure and the trademark blonde pageboy cut that’s since been popularly known as the “Diana cut”. She poses for the shutterbugs with grace, waves at the audiences and dodges the paparazzi — she is unmistakably Princess Diana.
However, when we finally see Watt’s face in its Diana avatar, its difficult to not notice the differences between the real Diana and her celluloid avatar. Despite the efforts and miracles of the make-up team and with Watts’s careful impersonation of Diana’s mannerisms and delicate grace, Watts is very much an actress playing a part. The images of the much photographed and admired Diana are too strongly etched in our memories for this illusion to be anything more than persuasive.
But given that Watts has displayed exceptionally good acting skills in the past and is more than capable of carrying a film, we’re sure she’ll nail the act of a princess in distress to perfection. The film also features Naveen Andrews as Hasnat Khan, Cas Anvar as Dodi Fayed, and Douglas Hodge as Paul Burrell.
The screenplay for Diana is by Stephen Jeffreys of The Libertine fame. Diana will hit the screens in United Kingdom on 5th September, 2013.
