Throwback Thursday: Forget Suicide Squad, here are more films with big, bad star casts

An ensemble film is certainly not an easy task to pull off. Each character in the script requires as much attention as the next, which is more suited for a TV series as compared to a movie. The audience also ends up talking about the cast of the movie instead of the storyline. Same is the case with the upcoming 5 August 2016 release Suicide Squad. Fans are more interested in Margot Robbie playing Harley Quinn, Will Smith playing Deadshot and Jared Leto’s portrayal of The Joker. As opposed to that, there’s little anticipation over the plot of the movie. Here’s a list of movies that has the same barrage of interesting characters that keep you glued to the movie: Mystery Men (1999) [caption id=“attachment_2935108” align=“alignnone” width=“825”] ![mystery-men_01](https://images.firstpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/mystery-men_01.jpg) Image courtesy: Facebook[/caption] Another ensemble movie based on a comic, director Kinka Usher brings to life the ‘Dark Horse’ comic, Mystery Men. Seven lame superhero wannabes team up to use their dubious powers to save a bustling metropolis when the real superhero, Captain Amazing, is kidnapped. They also face off against Amazing’s arch nemesis Casanova Frankenstein and his sidekick. Watch these non heroes trying to save their city comically from the crutches of Frankenstein. Ocean’s Eleven (2001) [caption id=“attachment_2935120” align=“alignnone” width=“825”] ![111111111111111111111111111](https://images.firstpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/111111111111111111111111111.jpg) Image courtesy: Facebook[/caption] A remake of the 1960’s movie of the same name, a rag-tag group of con artists and ex-cons team up for master heist. The titular hero, Danny Ocean (George Clooney) conspires with his old pal Rusty Ryan (Brad Pitt) to rob 150 million dollars from an underground vault that serves three of Las Vegas’ biggest casinos. They recruit nine other men, each with his own criminal specialty. There’s moneyman Reuben Tishkoff (Elliot Gould), card dealer Frank (Bernie Mac), pickpocket Linus (Matt Damon), aging con artist Saul (Carl Reiner), British explosives pro Basher (Don Cheadle), techie Dell (Eddie Jemison), rude-boy brothers Virgil (Casey Affleck) and Turk (Scott Caan), and professional acrobat Yen (Shaobo Qin). The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003) [caption id=“attachment_2935098” align=“alignnone” width=“825”] ![2222222222222222222](https://images.firstpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/2222222222222222222.jpg) Image courtesy: Facebook[/caption] The League is based on a comic book miniseries by Alan Moore in an alternate universe where characters of literary classics exist in reality. All our favourite ones have assembled together to fight crime ( a la Justice League). We have Allan Quatermain (Sean Connery) from H. Rider Haggard’s King Solomon’s Mines; Mina Harker (Peta Wilson) from Bram Stoker’s Dracula; Tom Sawyer (Shane West) from several works by Mark Twain; Dorian Gray (Stuart Townsend) from Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray; Captain Nemo (Naseeruddin Shah) from Jules Verne’s 2_0,000 Leagues Under the Sea_; The Invisible Man (Tony Curran) from H.G. Wells sci-fi novella; and several others. Working together, the odd assortment of characters must combine their powers to defeat a mysterious villain and save the world from destruction. Sucker Punch (2011) [caption id=“attachment_2935114” align=“alignnone” width=“825”] ![](https://images.firstpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/444444444444.jpg) Image courtesy: Facebook[/caption] From the director who gave you Batman Vs Superman: Dawn of Justice, Zack Synder gives you Sucker Punch, an epic action fantasy that takes us into the vivid imagination of a young girl. A trip into the 1950s takes us into the mental asylum which holds young Baby Doll (Emily Browning) who is to undergo a lobotomy in less than a week’s time. Faced with unimaginable odds, she retreats to a fantastical world in her imagination where she and four other female inmates at the asylum plot to escape the facility. The lines between reality and fantasy blur as Baby Doll and her four companions, as well as a mysterious guide, fight to retrieve the five items they need that will allow them to break free from their captors before it’s too late. Bonus: The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Rings [caption id=“attachment_2935256” align=“alignnone” width=“825”] ![160072628_125ec5](https://images.firstpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/160072628_125ec5.jpg) Image courtesy: Facebook[/caption] Frodo Baggins plunges into the perilous trek to take the mystical One Ring to Mount Doom so its magical powers cannot be possessed by evil Lord Sauron. Starring Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom, Sir Ian Mckellen, Liv Tyler and Viggo Mortensen, the movie literally breathes life into JRR Tolkien’s masterpiece.
