The Sopranos is the best written TV series of all time

The Writers Guild of America, West (WGAW) and the Writers Guild of America, East (WGAE), announced their list of the 101 best-written TV series. "This list is not only a tribute to great TV, it is a dedication to all writers who devote their hearts and minds to advancing their craft," said WGAW President Chris Keyser and WGAE President Michael Winship in a joint statement. Compiled on the basis of online votes, the WGAW and WGAE list looks at seven decades of television writing. Here are the top 10:

1. The Sopranos (started in 1999)

2. Seinfeld (started in 1989)

3. The Twilight Zone (started in 1959)

4. All in the Family (started in 1971)

5. M*A*S*H* (started in 1972)

6. The Mary Tyler Moore Show (started in 1970)

7. Mad Men (started in 2007)

8. Cheers (started in (1982)

9. The Wire (started in 2002)

10. The West Wing (started in 1999)

The Simpsons (at no. 11) just missed being in the top 10. The list includes popular series like FRIENDS (at no. 24), Sex and the City (at no. 39), Buffy the Vampire Slayer (at no. 49), Game of Thrones (at no. 40), Breaking Bad (at no. 13) and 30 Rock (at no. 21). A few British series, like Downton Abbey (at no. 43), The Office (at no. 50) and Monty Python's Flying Circus (at no. 73), made it into the list.
