The Lion King live-action remake in the offing; will be released before Jungle Book 2

It has been confirmed that there will be a live-action remake of the Disney 1994 classic The Lion King. This remake will be directed by Jon Favreau, who also directed the live-action remake of Jungle Book, which released in 2016.

In September 2016, Walt Disney Studios said, “We can officially confirm that The Walt Disney Studios and director Jon Favreau are putting a new reimagining of The Lion King on the fast-track to production.”

In an interview, visual supervisor of Jungle Book Robert Legato was asked if he would be part of the The Lion King crew, and if this film would be released before Jungle Book 2. He said, “Yeah, actually, I am. … It’s the very next one [we’re doing]. We’ve already started the plans, and updates to the various ways that we filmed The Jungle Book, to add to and extend the art form a little bit more in The Lion King, which is going to be another live-action-looking movie.”

It is said that the success of Jungle Book prompted the creators to remake The Lion King. In fact, Legato says that it is only when they were making Jungle Book that they realised animal characters could hold the audiences attention and the film could have good scenes. This encouraged them to look at the story of Simba.

In a release, Disney said, “The Lion King builds on Disney’s success of re-imagining its classics for a contemporary audience with films like Maleficent, Cinderella, and the upcoming Beauty and the Beast.”

Director Favreau revealed the lead cast on Twitter on 18 February, 2017. Community actor Donald Glover will voice Simba, and James Earl Jones Jones will lend his voice to Mufasa, Simba’s father. Jones also voiced this character in the original animation film.
