Tanmay Bhat parodies Lata Mangeshkar-Sachin Tendulkar; draws Sena, Twitter ire

Within the space of just a week, comedian Tanmay Bhat seems to have gone from online hero to online villain.

While his Feminism 101 monologue got Tanmay lots of kudos, a new Snapchat video the All India Bakchod member posted, got him immense flak.

What’s in the video?

In the short video, which he shared on Snapchat last week, Tanmay presents a skit where ‘Sachin Tendulkar’ and ‘Lata Mangeshkar’ (Bhat using the face swap option on Snapchat and mimicking their inimitable voices) diss each other.

The skit takes off from a recent news report where former cricketer Vinod Kambli was quoted as saying that Virat Kohli is a hundred times better than Sachin Tendulkar. Kambli has since denied that he made this remark.

Tanmay, as Sachin, begins by spewing some ire against Virat, before seemingly becoming aware of the camera and spouting more diplomatic lines like, “Virat is good with the bat, and the ladies”.
However, the mask slips when Lata (Tanmay again) Mangeshkar tells him that Virat is indeed better than him.

Cue plenty of insults from the two ‘icons’ towards each other – Sachin targeting Lata’s age (he refers to her as 5,000 years old, her wrinkled visage as the result of ‘being kept under water’ for several days) and Lata telling Sachin that her fans will at least be able to mourn her by singing her songs at her funeral.

Then there’s a little bit more of mudslinging in Marathi, and the video ends.

What Tanmay has to say:

Even before he put up the video, Tanmay had included a disclaimer saying he “loved both Sachin and Lata”. After the negative reactions, he put up a photo of comedian Steve Carell with the caption, “Roast wale din yaad aa gaye, by god”.

The criticism:

Tanmay’s video drew plenty of criticism on Twitter, and Anupam Kher, Riteish Deshmukh were among those who tweeted against Sachin and Lata being mocked.

Things took a serious turn with political parties like the Shiv Sena and MNS jumping into the fray. MNS Chitrapat Sena president Ameya Khopkar asked for the video to be taken down and said he intended to file an FIR against Tanmay. The Shiv Sena and the NCP also said that they would be filing a police complaint against Tanmay Bhat.
