Tamil film producer Jaffer Sadiq arrested in connection to alleged drug smuggling case

In a shocking development, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has arrested a film producer in connection to an alleged drug trafficking case. In a statement issued by the NCB on Saturday, 9 March, Jaffer Sadiq, a former Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader, and a Tamil movie producer’s connection was found in a Rs 2,000 crore drug trafficking racket, which was busted last month. Speaking on the same, NCB deputy director general (operations) Gyaneshwar Singh confirmed Sadiq’s arrest and said he was the “kingpin” of the India-Australia-New Zealand drug trafficking network, which was being probed by the agency.

Singh further said that other details about the case will be revealed in the afternoon. Besides the film producer’s involvement in the smuggling racket, the officer also revealed that he had sent drugs worth Rs 2,000 crore to Australia and New Zealand in 45 parcels, adding that it was being sent abroad in concealing coconut and dry fruits.

NCB probing if drug smuggling money was used in his production company

Mentioning that Sadiq was on a run for the last few days. He went to Jaipur via Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad and others. The NCB has finally arrested him cracking down on his involvement as he amassed crore through drug smuggling and invested in real estate and film production including his latest release ‘Mangai’.

Another NCB officer, who wished not to be named also revealed that the agency is presently probing whether the drug money was used in his production company.

NCB’s busts drug racket

This comes days after several opposition parties in Tamil Nadu had been launching protests regarding Jaffer Sadiq’s alleged involvement in the drug racket. All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) general secretary and leader of the opposition Edappadi K Palaniswami had also demanded Chief Minister MK Stalin explain how a party leader was involved in a drugs racket.

Earlier this year, the NCB had busted a drug cartel after a four-month-long joint probe with the Delhi Police. It was carried out after receiving a tipoff from New Zealand and Australian police authorities about the drugs being sent to their countries from India under the guise of food products.
