Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy, Maharshi, Jersey, Majili, Saaho: A look at 2019's most anticipated Telugu films
For Telugu Cinema, 2018 was all about good content and it didn’t matter who was playing the lead roles. And it makes you wonder, if a similar trend will continue this year, especially with several big budget and also high-concept films lined up for release this year. Sankranthi was a mixed bag for Telugu film industry, which saw four films release in theatres on four consecutive days.
While NTR Kathanayakudu earned good reviews, especially for Balakrishna’s portrayal of NT Rama Rao in the latter stages of his life, the film didn’t quite strike gold at the box-office. Early estimates suggest that it’s going to be an uphill task for the film to recover big money in the long run. Then, Rajinikanth’s Petta managed to impress the audience; however, it’s yet to expand in a big way across the two Telugu speaking states. Ram Charan, Boyapati Sreenu’s Vinaya Vidheya Rama took a phenomenal opening; however, the film was panned by critics. Despite facing a lot of criticism for its story and screenplay, the film managed to draw good numbers at the box-office, which prompted many to say that it’s purely due to Ram Charan’s popularity.
Finally, Venkatesh, Varun Tej starrer F2 turned out to be the dark horse in the race and laughed its way to the bank. The film was praised for its entertainment quotient, and the lead actors, in particular, were lauded for their comic timing and performances. Almost Rs 200 crores was at stake at the box-office this Sankranthi, and it remains to be seen how much the four films manage to make in the long run.
After F2, Tamannaah will return with That Is Mahalakshmi, the Telugu remake of Queen and her first full-fledged female-centric film. Then, there’s Samantha-Nandini Reddy’s film, which is a remake of an acclaimed Korean film, which is under production; and Prashanth Varma-Rajasekhar’s Kalki too has managed to intrigue the audience. Telugu cinema’s slate looks quite promising too. Here’s what else is in store in 2019:
Akhil Akkineni teamed up with Tholiprema’s director, Venky Atluri, for this romantic drama which, like the title suggests, follows one youngster’s quest to find true love. Apart from Akhil, the film also has Nidhhi Agrewal, Izabelle and Farah Karimaee playing important roles. In 2018, Venky Atluri earned rave reviews for his work in Tholiprema, and all eyes will be on him to see if he can repeat the magic once again with Akhil in Mr Majnu. Music director Thaman and cinematographer George C Williams are also onboard for this film which will release on 25 January.
NTR Mahanayakudu vs Yatra
February will witness the year’s biggest battle of biopics with Balakrishna starrer NTR Mahanayakudu and Mammootty starrer Yatra releasing on 7 and8 February respectively. While NTR Mahanayakudu, directed by Krish, traces NT Ramarao’s journey into politics and how he ended up becoming CM of Andhra Pradesh in early ‘80s, Mahi V Raghav’s Yatra focuses on the padayatra which changed YS Rajasekhar Reddy as a person and how it paved for his thumping victory in 2004 general elections in Andhra Pradesh. The clash between the two films comes at a time when the political atmosphere, especially in Andhra Pradesh, is charged up with both TDP and YSRCP slugging it out to win the elections this year.
Jersey vs Majili
— Nani (@NameisNani) June 15, 2018
2018 might have given mixed results for Nani, but his first release of 2019 promises to be one of the most inspiring tales narrated in recent times. The actor will be seen as an ageing cricketer, who’s past his prime, and how he manages to make a comeback in Gowtam Tinnanuri’s Jersey. Shraddha Srinath is his co-star in this drama which has music by Anirudh. The film is slated for release on 5 April, and on the same day, Naga Chaitanya, Samantha starrer Majili too is expected to be a major crowd puller. Majili is the duo’s first film together after they got married in 2017, and Shiva Nirvana, who has directed the film, is said to have made an intense romantic drama about the different stages in a couple’s life post their wedding.
Mahesh Babu returns to the screen this year with Vamshi Paidipally’s Maharshi, which also has Pooja Hegde and Allari Naresh in lead roles. At the moment, all we know is that Mahesh Babu plays a rich businessman who returns to India; however, it’s anyone’s guess what aspect this film is going to delve into. The film has been shot in US, Hyderabad, Dehradun, and the team will soon head to Pollachi to wrap up the film. Initially, Maharshi was slated for release on 5 April; however, with makers of Jersey and Majili too announcing that they are going to release their films on the same day, Maharshi’s release has been pushed to a later point of time.
Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika, who impressed everyone in Geetha Govindam last year, are back once again in Bharat Kamma’s Dear Comrade. The film is being shot in Kakinada, and Vijay too will be speaking in a new slang for the first time in his career. On the other hand, Rashmika will be seen as a cricketer. The film’s posters promise an intense romantic drama, and just like Geetha Govindam, this film too could spring a big surprise at the box-office.
Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy
Chiranjeevi, Amitabh Bachchan, Nayanthara starrer Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy is one of the most ambitious films in Telugu, post Baahubali 2. Directed by Surender Reddy, the film is being produced by Ram Charan. The period drama narrates the story of Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy, who led a rebellion against the British in the mid-19th century, and the makers aren’t leaving any stone unturned to make Sye Raa the biggest film of 2019. The budget of the film is being touted as Rs 200 crores, and it’ll release across South India in October this year. Vijay Sethupathi, Tamannaah, and Jagapathi Babu are also part of the cast. Amit Trivedi is scoring the music, and Rathnavelu is the cinematographer.
More than two years after he took the nation by storm with Baahubali 2, Prabhas returns with Saaho this year. The spy drama, directed by Sujeeth, has been in the making for a while now and the makers have been cautious to not reveal much about the film; however, a glimpse of the action sequences that the team pulled off in Abu Dhabi showed the epic scale of the film and there’s every reason to be excited about the film which will release on 15 August in Telugu, Tamil, and Hindi. Shraddha Kapoor, Mandira Bedi, and Neil Nitin Mukesh are also part of the cast.
Allu Arjun-Trivikram’s film
The suspense surrounding Allu Arjun’s next film, after Naa Peru Surya, came to an end when he confirmed that he’ll be teaming up with Trivikram Srinivas once again. The duo had worked together for Julayi and Son Of Satyamurthy in the past, and fans of Allu Arjun will be hoping to see a full-fledged entertainer from him post-Naa Peru Surya. The film is expected to go on floors soon and hit the screens in the second half of 2019.
Ram-Puri Jagannadh’s film
Ram Pothineni needed to change his onscreen image desperately, and so, he ended up teaming up with Puri Jagannadh for the first time in his career. The film has been titled as iSmart Shankar, and given Puri’s penchant to write quirky characters for his lead actors, it remains to be seen if Ram manages to embrace the new character whole-heartedly. All in all, it’s an interesting combination to watch out for this summer.
Venkatesh and Naga Chaitanya’s much-awaited Venky Mama will go on floors soon. Directed by Bobby, the real life uncle-nephew will play reel life uncle-nephew, and it’s said to be a solid commercial film with a good mix of comedy and action. Rakul Preet is paired with Naga Chaitanya in the film.
