There was a time when we thought nothing can beat Hindi saas bahu daily soaps, given the sheer volume of people watching them. But soon we’ve made way for web series to take over our lives, especially those of the next generation. We connected to them and loved them for exploring everyday topics and addressing cliches. In South India, while many are still hooked to never ending daughter-in-law and mother-in-law revenge plots, a number of web series have taken over the digital world. In Tamil, Malayalam and Telugu, stories of live-in relationships, twisted weddings and thriller dramas are enthralling audience all across the four states. With millions of views, the latest bilingual Social starring Rana Daggubatti is a primary example of the changing trends in south Indian web series. Madhavan too is all set to feature in a web series titled Breath to be out later this year. However, all of them to seem to be following one common formula: exploring modern relationships. Most of these series deal with the love stories of couples experiencing live-in dilemmas, the pressure of getting married or that of finding love. Though the content might seem similar, these Telugu and Tamil web series have actually managed to be a success. Also, thanks to daily soaps still pulling off the same old concepts, most of these web series have managed to set a new trend. Black sheep, another Tamil series, deals with the story of a typical boy stuck in the world of engineering, while actually wanting to become a DJ. This too struck a cord for being apt in today’s times. The most recent series As I am suffering from Kadhal, on Hotstar, has managed to stay with audiences as a relatable story of four couples packaged into one entertaining drama. And on the other hand, both Geetha Subramanyam and Livin deal with a couple who are in a live-in relationship and all the drama that follows. However, in Livin, there is a third wheel angle. Imagine, Dice Media’s Little Things made with a couple and a kebab mein haddi? The Tamil series, in parts is a lot like that. Telugu series Pilla starring Dhanya in many parts, takes over from Charmi’s film Mantra. The story revolves around one night that changes the life of a girl and how she goes about fixing this puzzle and finds cues from that one incident. Meanwhile, after the successful Pelli Gola, Viu seems to be on a mission on the digital front. With Social, Rana Daggubatti has now been smitten by this bug and the series has so far created quite the buzz. Social revolves around the story of a missing girl and how her brother, along with other masterminds, try to solve this mystery with the influence of social media. Social, unlike Pelli Gola, experiments with a different genre and makes it for an intersting watch, especially with TVF fame Naveen Kasturia playing the protagonist. Malayalam Though Malayalam has not seen as many web-series as Telugu and Tamil and is still growing in terms of viewership, the industry is not far behind. Singappooram presented by We Are A Sambavam, is quite the rib tickling Malayalam comedy. Youthappam and Utsaha Ithihasam have also made the cut. While Youthappam deals with the tales of youngsters and friendship, Utsaha Ithihasam goes a step ahead. Directed by Krishand, this saga of spirits deals with the life of two men and events of their lives while they are intoxicated. The director is known for his short film Bhagavathy Kaavile Paapikal which was showcased at the Cannes Short Film Corner in 2016. Kannada Kannada content for the web, though taking baby steps, has several shows to boost about already. Right from Vinayak Joshi’s Loose Connection to By 2 Bengaluru, Hingandra Hyaanga and more, the Kannada digital world is now experiencing a wave of tales revolving around urban couples, friendship and more. While By 2 Bengaluru proved to be an entertainer all about capturing the essence of the city through the lives of five youngsters, Loose Connection on the other hand presented a love story with a dose of humor.
