Here's why Shah Rukh Khan rejected Anil Kapoor's role in Danny Boyle's Oscar-winning 'Slumdog Millionaire'

Back in 2009, Danny Boyle’s film Slumdog Millionaire won eight Oscars, including Best Film and two Oscars for music composer and singer A.R. Rahman. Anil Kapoor, who played a crucial part in the film, also attended the ceremony. But not many people know Boyle’s first choice for the part was the Jawan star Shah Rukh Khan. Why did the star say no? Back in 2010, in an interview, Shah Rukh Khan said, “Danny and I are good friends, and we even collaborated on a project. I was initially interested in the film due to its intriguing theme. However, I declined the role because the character of the host seemed somewhat deceptive.” Anil Kapoor became a part of history when the Indian cast-led Slumdog Millionaire swept the Oscars in 2009 but the actor remembers the eve of the ceremony for being scolded by his wife. Directed by Danny Boyle, Slumdog Millionaire received 10 nominations at the 81st Academy Awards, out of which the film took home eight trophies. Anil Kapoor played the role of a slimy game show host in the movie. “For family, Oscar doesn’t matter. My wife and I were discussing (daughter) Sonam the night before Oscar! I said ‘‘Let me sleep now’’ and she said ‘’leave Oscar, listen to me first.’’ So even then, family was my priority. I got a lot of firing from Sunita the night before Oscar ceremony,” Anil Kapoor told Press Trust of India back in 2019. The actor was speaking at a special ceremony in Mumbai to celebrate ten years of the iconic win, along with Gulzar and A R Rahman.
