Sinead O'Connor vs Miley Cyrus: Who you calling a slut?

Irish singer Sinead O’Connor has started off a long and lengthy Internet feud with pop-star Miley Cyrus, now infamous for twerking and swinging naked on a wrecking ball (Hannah Montanna who?). Here’s how out it all began and played out. Sinead wrote an Open letter to Miley Cyrus on her blog , asking Miley not to let herself be prostituted by a couple of studio producers who don’t care for women. She wrote, “Nothing but harm will come in the long run, from allowing yourself to be exploited, and it is absolutely NOT in ANY way an empowerment of yourself or any other young women, for you to send across the message that you are to be valued (even by you) more for your sexual appeal than your obvious talent."  Sinead also slammed the music industry saying “the music business doesn’t give a shit about you, or any of us. They will prostitute you for all you are worth…and when you end up in rehab as a result of being prostituted, ‘they’ will be sunning themselves on their yachts in Antigua, which they bought by selling your body and you will find yourself very alone.” Miley’s We Can’t Stop single has reference to the drug ‘Molly’, and on the Jimmy Kimmel show she referred to herself as being constantly high. O’Connor also goes on to slam Miley for recent tyrst with nudity, saying that walking around naked makes girls “prey for animals and less than animals, a distressing majority of whom work in the music industry and it’s associated media.” The video of her song Wrecking ball, has Miley swinging butt-naked on a wrecking ball and licking a sledgehammer, in what is best described as slutty. Miley of course didn’t react too kindly to Sinead’s letter and tweeted out the following. In her first tweet, she referred compared Sinead to Amanda Bynes ( the actress had called Miley ugly on Twitter) and posted it with tweets of Sinead when she was going through obvious mental distress. Then Miley followed it up with bizarre tweets of how she’s too busy to reply since she’s hosting Saturday Night Live. Miley also tweeted a picture of Sinead tearing a picture of the Pope.

After that Sinead went and wrote another letter to Miley calling her a prostitute for posting those tweets. She wrote, “Miley… Really? Who the fuck is advising you? Because taking me on is even more ****in’ stupid than behaving like a prostitute and calling it feminism. You have posted today tweets of mine which are two years old, which were posted by me when I was unwell and seeking help so as to make them look like they are recent. In doing so you mock myself and Amanda Bynes for having suffered with mental health issues and for having sought help. (You can view the whole letter here. ) [caption id=“attachment_1152579” align=“alignleft” width=“380”]Miley Cyrus at a performance. Sinead’s also implied that what Miley is out to get her and her tweets are “designed to damage me and my career and has caused me enormous distress and harrassment and has potential to damage my career." It seems Sinead’s site has crashed thanks to all the traffic it’s getting. Also Amanda Palmer, wife of Neil Gaiman and part of the duo The Dresden Dolls has also jumped into the whole Miley-Sinead fight by posting her own lengthy letter to Sinead discussing music industry, women, young girls and sex. (You can read that full post here. ) She writes to Sinead saying she agrees with her on the point of female musicians/rockstars being exploited by the music industry. “Being a female musician/rockstar/whatever is a pretty fucking impossible and mind-bendingly frustrating job. Our male counterparts are given a way wider playing field than we are. It’s a Chinese finger trap that reflects the basic problems of our women-times: we’re either scolded for looking sexy or we’re scolded for not playing the game.” However, she feels that Sinead is wrong to blame Miley. She goes on to say that one can’t assume that Miley has no agency in all of this. “She’s writing the plot and signing the checks…” Palmer said. She added that Miley definitely knew what she was doing when she decide to swing naked on a wrecking ball. She writes: “Sex sells. We all know it. Miley knows it better than anyone: swinging naked on a big metal ball simply gets you more hits than swinging on a big metal ball wearing clothes… But none of this means that Miley is following anyone else’s script.” For Miley the script seems to have worked for now as Wrecking Ball was the most-watch video on Vevo in 24 hours. Palmer makes a valid point about women’s choice saying , “I want to live in a world where WE as women determine what we wear and look like and play the game as our fancy leads…let’s give our young women the right weapons to fight with as they charge naked into battle, instead of ordering them to get back in the house and put some goddamn clothes on."  PS: Miley Cyrus has done another raunchy photoshoot with Terry Richardson, who also directed the Wrecking Ball  video. You can watch more of those pictures here but be warned they are not safe for work.
