Writer Shobhaa De found herself the target of Twitterati’s ire after her tweet about the Indian contingent at the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics. On Monday (8 August) night, De tweeted:

Even as sportspersons like Jwala Gutta, Viren Rasquinha and yes, Abhinav Bindra castigated De for her comments ( read the full story on Firstpost ), Twitter users took it upon themselves to school Shobhaa in the fine art of criticism. From comments about returning to her ‘real’ country to her age, appearance and occupation, there was backlash aplenty.
Incidentally, De had tweeted disparagingly of the Olympics just a few days ago, and had received several angry replies on the micro-blogging platform:
De seemed unperturbed by the turn of events — this is hardly the first time she’s voiced controversial point of view — and told CNN-News 18 that she did not intend to apologise for her remark. Despite Firstpost’s repeated attempts, were unable to reach De for comment. Her last tweet (at the time of publishing this piece) was:
