Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment Pvt. Ltd has responded to the Delhi High Court over a plea by former NCB Mumbai Zonal Director Sameer Wankhede against the Netflix series ‘ _The Ba\*\*\*ds of Bollywood_’ case, where the production house called the defamation suit against it as “wholly misconceived, untenable in law, and devoid of merit."
Wankhede was already the subject of “public ridicule and adverse commentary" before the release of the show, so he cannot claim fresh reputational damage has been mentioned in the response of the production house.
“It is also submitted that even before the release of “Ba***ds of Bollywood”, the plaintiff was already the subject of public ridicule and adverse commentary. The plaintiff’s involvement in the aforementioned FIR had attracted significant public attention and criticism, as is clearly demonstrated by numerous social media posts, news articles, and public discourse surrounding the allegations. These materials establish that the plaintiff’s reputation had already been adversely affected in the public domain well before the release of the said series. The plaintiff, who has an already contested public image, has sought to invoke the defamation proceedings merely to silence artistic and satirical/humorous portrayals,” the reply of Red Chillies Entertainment Pvt. Ltd stated.
The production house argued that the web series is “a work of situational satire" and does not name or depict Wankhede, nor does it contain any defamatory material.
Talking about the show, it is created, co-written, and directed by SRK’s Aryan Khan. It features Bobby Deol, Lakshya Lalwani, Raghav Juyal, Sahher Bambba, Anya Singh, Manoj Pahwa, Manish Chaudhari, Rajat Bedi, Meherzan Mazda, Divik Sharma, Mona Singh, Gautami Kapoor, Vijayant Kohli, Neville Bharucha, and Armaan Khera in prominent roles with cameos from Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, SS Rajamouli, Karan Johar, Ranbir Kapoor and Ranveer Singh among others.
