Shah Rukh Khan approached by Sanjay Leela Bhansali for biopic on poet Sahir Ludhianvi?
When he appeared solo in the third season of Koffee with Karan, Shah Rukh Khan had referred to filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 2010 film Guzaarish as 'poetic.' Little did he know that six years later, he will be offered to play a historic poet in a Bhansali directorial.
DNA reports that Bhansali has approached Khan with the script of Gustakhiyan, a biopic that he is planning to make on the illustrious life of poet and lyricist Sahir Ludhianvi.
Ludhianvi was born in Punjab after which he moved to Lahore before Partition. His thought-provoking Urdu poetry evoked outrage from Pakistan so he fled to Mumbai a couple of years after Partition. He went on to work as a lyricist and earned two Filmfare Awards subsequently for M Sadiq's period drama Taj Mahal and Yash Chopra's romantic saga Kabhie Kabhie. A heavy drinker and smoker, he breathed his last in 1980.
Bhansali is known for the poetic tone in his films like Devdas, Khamoshi, Guzaarish, Ram Leela and Bajirao Mastani. It will be a befitting tribute to Ludhianvi when Bhansali makes a film on his life. And who better to play the poet than Khan. We have seen glimpses of him as a poet in Yash Chopra's Veer Zara and Devdas. Interestingly, Devdas was the first and the last time that Bhansali and Khan collaborated on a film.
Ludhianvi was also known for his affairs with novelist Amrita Pritam and then singer and actor Sudha Malhotra. However, he remained unmarried for the entirety of his life. As per the same report by DNA, Bhansali had considered Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone for the role of Pritam earlier this year but then he diverted all his attention to another biopic Padmavati.
While there is no official word out on Khan's confirmation, we hope that it is a nod so that we can witness Bhansali and Khan create some fine poetry on the screen yet again.
