A case for publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form has been registered against Malayalam film actor Shwetha Menon on a complaint based on certain scenes in some of her past movies, police said on Wednesday.
Police said that no case was initially registered on the complaint by Martin Menachery, but he later went to court seeking registration of an FIR.
Following the court’s direction, an FIR, under section 67 (publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form) of the Information Technology (IT) Act and provisions of the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act was filed on Tuesday, an officer of Ernakulam Central police station said.
Shweta was seen with Aamir Khan and Ajay Devgn in the 1997 film Ishq and then with Shah Rukh Khan in Asoka.
Advocate Vimala Binu of the Kerala High Court has stated that the charges are unlikely to stand legally. “Swetha has performed in films as part of her professional freedom. These are certified films, not banned in India. There is no legal violation in acting in such films,” she said.
Shwetha became a prominent name in the Malayalam industry and went on to do films like Salt N’ Pepper, Paleri Manikyam: Oru Pathirakolapathakathinte Katha, Rathinirvedam, and Kalimannu.
In 2018, she also participated in the Malayalam reality TV series Bigg Boss, hosted by Mohanlal.
The actress who has landed in a massive controversy is in the running for the post of president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA). The elections will be held on August 15.
