'Satyamev Jayate will become India's new Sunday habit'

Aamir Khan’s show ‘Satyameva Jayate’ has a formidable foe, the lazy Sunday mornings that most of India is used to. But for an actor used to testing boundaries, this may not be too much of a challenge.

'Satyamev Jayate will become India's new Sunday habit'

1. Shailja Arora, fashion designer in Benaras, mother of two, uses Sunday mornings for a sumptuous massage and catching up on gossip at Assi Ghat over cups of milky tea, as the mighty Ganga flows towards infinity. On Sunday the 6th, she has an appointment with another craftsman. Yes, she has heard of ‘Satyamev Jayate’ and may watch it if her meeting ends on time. 2. Shatrujeet Nath in Kandivli, Mumbai, father of one, ex-business journalist and now about to finish authoring a trilogy in fiction, uses Sundays to achieve nothing, which he believes is very difficult. The TV is never put on during day, but his wife may make an exception on May 6th. Aniket Amte, grandson of Baba Amte and son of Dr Prakash Amte, based in Bhamragarh in Naxalite country at the heart of India uses Sunday mornings to combine work in neighbouring adivasi villages and a relaxing swim in a river. Yes, he has heard of ‘Satyamev Jayate’, but is unlikely to watch TV: the family only watches news. 4. Anand Sudhan Kasiviswanathan, father of one, works in an NGO in Chitrakoot on the border of UP and MP. He uses Sunday mornings for yoga and cricket with the local boys. Yes, he has heard of ‘Satyamev Jayate’, and may watch it if it is related to social causes that interest him: after all, he is involved in the largest free eye-hospital in rural India 5.Rajeev Vatsaraj, Second-in-Command, Border Security Force, based in Siliguri, uses Sunday mornings for yoga and left-over office work. Yes, he has heard of ‘Satyamev Jayate’, and will definitely watch it. 6.Lakshmi Yelgam, mother of two, wife of an alcoholic, our new maid, based in Ganesh Murti Nagar slum in Cuffe Parade Mumbai, does her usual work on Sundays if she hasn’t asked for an off day. Yes, she has a TV but only the kids watch it. No, she has no clue about ‘Satyamev Jayate’. 7. Mayank Gupta, Deputy Secretary in a charitable foundation in Udaipur, father of one, uses Sunday mornings to meet his relatives. But is likely to make an exception this Sunday. Swimming, getting massaged, playing galli cricket, doing yogasanas, finishing house work, catching up on gossip, visiting relatives, holding tea meetings, hand-washing clothes, trying out dosas, finishing left-over work, reading Sunday supplements, besides of course, other TV programmes: that’s what Mr Aamir Khan’s show is up against. My prediction? Mr Khan will win. ‘Satyamev Jayate’ will become one more Sunday habit. Because in a nation as large as ours, there will always be enough people who will change even while there are an equal number who won’t change. (My thanks to all the friends mentioned above.)
