Another reboot is coming to TV, and this time it's the 80s iconic show Cagney & Lacey that will be brought back to life.
The police crime drama, which ran from 1982 to 1988, revolved around the lives of Mary Beth Lacey and Chris Cagney — two female police officers in New York City.
Cagney & Lacey was a trendsetter in many ways as it showed two entirely different characters — Cagney a single, career-minded woman, while Lacey a married mother — fight bad guys as New York City police detectives. The two detective partners were also close friends who together combated sexism in the male-dominated workplace. The original show starred Tyne Daly as Mary Beth Lacey and Sharon Gless as Chris Cagney.
In its reboot, Grey's Anatomy star Sarah Drew has been roped in to star as Chris Cagney in CBS' upcoming drama pilot. The role of Mary Beth Lacey will be portrayed by Michelle Hurd, star of Blindspot.
It was recently announced that Sarah Drew will be exiting Grey's Anatomy at the end of its fourteenth season. Drew will be playing LAPD Detective Chris Cagney; Lacey’s spirited and easygoing partner. Michelle Hurd’s character Mary Beth Lacey will be athletic, polished, and a former high school track and field champion.
The series is being written by Bridget Carpenter, and will be directed by Rosemary Rodriguez. The new Cagney & Lacey will be set in Los Angeles, and not in New York City like the original series was. Also, the character of Lacey has been conceived and written as African American, another big distinction from the original series.
The original series won two Emmy Awards for the Best Drama and six Best Actress in a Drama Series awards — four for Daly and two for Gless.
