Star cast: Sanya Malhotra, Nishant Dahiya and Kanwaljit Singh
Director: Arati Kadav
After witnessing several south remakes on the big screen like Kabir Singh, Shehzaada, Jersey, and Baby John with recently being Deva, another remake is gearing up to release on OTT in the form of Mrs (remake of Malayalam movie The Great Indian Kitchen ).
Talking about the plot, it starts with an energetic and cheerful track where lead protagonist Richa (Sanya Malhotra) is dancing with joy with her gang. She has a dance group and is passionate about dancing and wants to make her career in that field.
Soon, she gets married to Diwakar in an arranged marriage setup. Now Diwakar (who is a doctor) and his father (Kanwaljit Singh) symbolise the element of the patriarchal society. As per Diwakar’s family, Richa should prioritize the happiness of her husband and in-laws.
Richa now tries to adapt to her new family’s rules and pattern. She learns to cook and does all household chores like a full-time housewife. However, her efforts are not taken into consideration or even acknowledged as she continues to slog.
Just like his father, Diwakar also has a patriarchal mindset. According to him, Richa’s work is to cook food, do household chores, keep his parents happy and satisfy his needs, and soon become a mother of his kids.
Richa tries to convince Diwakar and his dad to allow her to take a job as a dance teacher in a school, but they reject it saying it doesn’t suit their status. Now, will Richa break the shackles to achieve this dream and challenge the patriarchal society? For that, you have to watch Mrs on Zee5.
To be honest, this kind of story with a contemporary touch has been shown several times in Bollywood and even in Hindi and regional soap operas. The biggest letdown for me is that in the name of feminism, you can’t show old content with new packaging. There was no newness, and despite having a runtime of less than 2 hours, Mrs looked dragged and long. It looked like director Arati Kadav consumed too much time creating the sympathy scenario for the lead protagonist among the viewers.
Talking about the performances, Sanya has done a decent job while Nishant and Kanwaljit Singh have played their roles to the T. On the whole, Mrs lacks novelty and can be skipped if you have good other options.
Rating: 2 (out of 5 stars)
Mrs will stream on Zee5 on 7th February
