The Sanjay Dutt Arms and Ammunition case has been no short of a Bollywood film. It’s been a whirlwind case, from the infamous 1993 bomb blasts, which was followed by Dutt’s dramatic arrest from the airport, to Dutt being re-sentenced to 6 years of jail in 2007. Ahead of his release in February from Yerawada jail, here is a time of events that occured since 1993. March 12, 1993: A series of bomb blasts stir Mumabi resulting in 257 deaths and close to 713 injuries. April 19, 1993: Sanjay Dutt is arrested from Mumbai airport by the Crime Branch as he returns from Mauritis, on charges of possession of an AK-56 rifle, a 9 mm pistol and ammunition. May 5, 1993: Dutt is granted interim bail by the Bombay High Court. July 4, 1994: He is arrested again as trial court cancels his bail. Nov 20, 1994: Dutt takes back his confession. October 1995: Supreme Court grants Dutt bail after a letter written by him to the Chief Justice. October 1995: Dutt is released from central prison after a 15 months period. November 2006: Dutt gets convicted under Arms Act and acquitted under TADA. July 2007: Dutt is sentenced to six years imprisonment. August 2007: Dutt moves SC challenging his conviction. November 2007: SC grants him regular bail. November 2011: SC begins hearing on appeals filed by Dutt and also by 100 convicts as well as the state. March 2013: SC sentences Dutt to five years in jail. Asks him to surrender within four weeks. October 2013: Dutt is granted furlough of 14 days, extended by another 14 days due to a pain in his leg. December 2013: Granted parole for 28 days, extended to another 28 days due to his wife’s tuberculosis. August 2015: Granted 30 days due to daughter’s nose surgery January 6, 2016: Dutt to walk out of jail on February 27, 103 days ahead of the official end of his prison term.
