There are 288 members of the Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha. We see posters with their faces speckling different parts of the city, but that doesn’t solve the central mystery surrounding most MLAs – what exactly is it that they do other than wish us on festive occasions like Diwali and Eid? We can’t say much about 287 of the MLAs in the Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha, but we know why Baba Siddique, elected from Vandre West, keeps getting elected. Each year, around this time, Siddique settles an issue that is critical to Bandra (W)’s wellbeing: the feud between Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan. As an MLA who has been elected and re-elected, it goes without saying that he does a lot for his constituency. However, little is known about Siddique the man. So much so that on his personal website, he’s chosen to put up the uninformative Wikipedia page that tells us his birthday and that he’s organised crib contests for Christmas. However, there is more to the man than his Wikipedia page. [caption id=“attachment_1606541” align=“alignleft” width=“380”]

Last year, he also had the misfortune of being
threatened by Dawood Ibrahim.
However, Siddique’s greatest accomplishment is, without doubt, his iftaar parties. Last year, history was made when Salman and Shah Rukh Khan were not only both present at Siddique’s iftaar party, but they hugged each other. Back in 2008, the two actors had a much-publicised fight at Katrina Kaif’s birthday (it was one of the incidents that made Bandra news for an entire week). It took five years and one Baba Siddique to fix things. Sure, Salman’s brother Sohail said that no one should read too much into the hug because ‘Bhai’ was just being polite, fans of both stars went absolutely nuts. In the intervening year, there hasn’t been much to show that the two Khans have become BFF. However, for all those who were feeling disheartened by the idea of two of Bollywood’s biggest stars not getting along, never fear, Siddique’s iftaar party is here. This year again, the two actors were photographed hugging one another. Not just that, Siddique decided to provide some commentary, in case you all thought that he didn’t have his eye on the real issues that a MLA should keep under surveillance. https://twitter.com/BabaSiddique/status/485789128609374209 https://twitter.com/BabaSiddique/status/485823235712221185 Dear Internet, this is your cue to break out in jubilation. Not only did the two Khans hug, Salman did a “what’s up?” with his eyebrows, hugged Shah Rukh and then proceeded to crack a joke – about hugging, judging from his arm gestures – while posing for photos. There’s a video to prove it and Siddique, knowing what voters want from him, has uploaded it: https://twitter.com/BabaSiddique/status/485947908525527040 Look, it’s not as though all Siddique does is hang out with Bollywood stars, but let’s face it, thanks to his iftaar parties, Siddique is on track to become one of the few MLAs who isn’t just a name on a poster. He’s the man in the photo who has two Khans as arm candy.
