Saif Ali Khan to reprise his role as Langda Tyagi in Vishal Bhardwaj's Omkara spin-off?
Saif Ali Khan was pigeonholed as a metrosexual man, thanks to films like Farhan Akhtar's 2001 film Dil Chahta Hai, Nikhil Adwani's 2003 film Kal Ho Naa Ho and Kunal Kohli's 2004 film Hum Tum, until Vishal Bhardwaj's 2006 dark entertainer Omkara arrived.
His character of Langda Tyagi turned out to be arguably the best part of the film that also starred stalwarts like Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Konkona Sen Sharma, Vivek Oberoi and Bipasha Basu. Now, Mid-Day reports that Bhardwaj is planning a spin-off of his film which will explore the back story of Tyagi.
DNA reports that Saif has already given his nod to the film. The film, however, is currently in its pre-production stage. Along with Bhardwaj, Robin Bhatt and Abhishey Chaubey, who directed Udta Punjab last year, will reunite to pen down the script.
This will mark Saif's third collaboration with Bhardwaj following Omkara and the period drama Rangoon that released earlier this year. Saif is currently shooting for Raja Krishna Menon's comedy drama Chef and has wrapped up the shooting of his next production, Akhsat Verma's Kaalakandi. Both the films are slated to release on 14 July and 15 September respectively this year.
Besides the two projects, he is also planning a sequel to his 2014 semi-hit, Raj and DK's zom com (zombie comedy) Go Goa Gone.
While a glimpse into the back story of Langda Tyagi will be interesting, it will not be the first spin-off in Hindi cinema. Earlier this year, Neeraj Pandey produced Naam Shabana that explored the character of Taapsee Pannu who had a short yet impressionable cameo in the 2015 action thriller Baby. The film was helmed by Shivam Nair and was received well at the box office.
As Saif gears up to get into the shoes of Langda Tyagi yet again, it will be interesting to see whether any other member of the Omkara star cast will reprise their role in the spin-off.
