When you are paying tribute to 90’s Bollywood, it’s difficult to ignore Kumar Sanu. After all what is that decade without Akshay Kumar with a chest full of hair, swinging his hips to Sanu singing “Chura Ke Dil Mera” or a brooding Sanjay Dutt in Saajan, fantasizing about Madhuri Dixit as he lip syncs to “Mera Dil Bhi Kitna Hai”. So it is only fitting that when director Sharat Katariya decided to set his upcoming rom-com, Dum Laga Ke Haisha in the ’90s, he chose Anu Malik as his music composer and Kumar Sanu to croon the song “Dard Karaara”. It’s a ’90s’ double whammy, and how! [caption id=“attachment_2103617” align=“alignleft” width=“380”] Courtesy: Facebook[/caption] “Dard Karaara” came out recently and although the video is as kitschy as any vintage Bollywood number of that era – with Ayushmann Khurrana and Bhumi Pednekar in colour coordinated clothes dancing with back up dancers on the bank of a river – the highlight of this song is in its vocals. Sanu and Sadhana Sargam’s vocals make this song worth a nostalgia-inducing listen, whether or not you’re listening for ironic humour. If you rewind to your memories of Chitrahaar, you will remember that Sanu’s dard bhare nagme was quite the rage at one point. Perhaps keeping that in mind, lyricist Varun Grover has come up with lyrics like the following for “Dard Karaara”: Tumse mile dil mein utha dard karaara Jeene laga wohi jise ishq na maara The video of “Dard Karaara” also gives us a glimpse the pre iPod era, when cassettes and tape recorders were the only way to hear your favourite songs. In Dum Laga ke Haisha, Khurrana’s character is quite a fanboy of Sanu’s. The trailer shows Prem Prakash Tiwari (Khurrana) declare that there are three things that never fail to bring tears to his eyes, and one of them is Sanu’s voice. Dum Laga Ke Haisha starring Ayushmann Khurranna is all set to release on 27 February, 2015. Click here to view the video:
