Star cast: Allison Williams, Mckenna Grace, Dave Franco, Mason Thames, Scott Eastwood, Willa Fitzgerald, and Clancy Brown
Director: Josh Boone
After ‘It Ends With Us’, bestselling author Colleen Hoover’s another novel has been brought as the screen adaptation with ‘Regretting You’. While the former disappointed the audience despite being a box office hit, let’s find out whether Josh Boone’s directorial makes a mark or not?
Morgan Grant (Allison Williams), her sister Jenny Davidson (Willa Fitzgerald) and their boyfriends Chris Grant (Scott Eastwood) and Jonah Sullivan (Dave Franco) are seen enjoying their lives together as teenagers in their high school. At the party, Morgan tells Jonah that she is pregnant with Chris’ kid. Cut to 17 years later, Morgan is now a typical housewife who looks after her teenage daughter, Clara ( Mckenna Grace) and husband Chris.
On the other hand, Jenny, who just delivered a baby boy with Jonah, tells Morgan that they are both getting married. Simultaneously, there is a third track between Allison and his schoolboy crush Miller Adams (Mason Thames), whom she has a huge crush on.
While everything seems to be going like a daily and normal routine, Morgan and Jonah come to know about their spouses meeting with an accident, which leads to their deaths. Apart from their lives being turned upside-down, they discover some revelations which shape their lives.
Well, honestly, since I have not read the novel, I found there lack of depth in characterisations of the lead cast. Many things are left unsaid and unshared, which leaves you with queries and questions. While the movie is cliché and predictable but it keeps you hooked due to the performances of the ensemble.
Josh Boone, as the director, executed some sequences beautifully, which hit the right chord; however, many chunks are left unexplained with no logical reasoning, which makes you feel off.
Talking about the performances, Mckenna Grace has done a splendid job with his electric chemistry with Mason Thames being the highlight of the film. Allison Williams and Dave Franco deliver a mature performance with aptly supported by Scott Eastwood, Willa Fitzgerald, and Clancy Brown.
On the whole, ‘Regretting You’ is a film which starts like a breath of fresh air, only to be later marred by a cliche and predictable plot and screenplay.
