The new song from Vidya Balan’s Tumhari Sulu, ‘Rafu’, is breath of fresh air that Bollywood had been waiting for. The Hindi music industry has been obsessed with rehashing old songs lately. ‘Catchy’ is what music composers have been aiming for in the recent past, which is evident in their songs. ‘Rafu’, on the other hand, is a welcome departure from all of that. His simple words that are sung with ease by Ronkini Gupta, are more effective than one would imagine. Gupta’s honeyed voice lends the song the sincerity it needs, which makes it hit close to home. It looks like everything is working for this song, which could also be because of the fact that there aren’t any distractions. Minimal score, no silly phrases, definitely zero pretense. Tumhari Sulu also stars Neha Dhupia and will mark the Bollywood debut of RJ Malishka. It is co-produced by Atul Kasbekar’s Ellipsis Entertainment, and Bhushan and Krishan Kumar’s T-Series Films. It is slated to release on 24 November, along with Rajiv Dhingra’s comedy Firangi. Listen to the song here:
