One of the memorable scenes of the iconic film 3 Idiots featured the three lead actors Aamir Khan, R Madhavan, and Sharman Joshi in a drunk state. Well, the scene that required all three of them to be drunk, has an interesting story behind its filming. R Madhavan, who is currently garnering critical acclaim for his role in Shaitaan, recalled the unusual circumstances behind the shooting of the scene as he made an appearance on the BeerBiceps podcast.
Bollywood actor and filmmaker R Madhavan revealed that he was actually drunk on set that day on Aamir Khan’s suggestion. Taking the trip down memory lane, the Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein actor confirmed that all three central actors were drunk and also revealed the reason behind the same. Madhavan shared, “So, Aamir’s idea was that in drunk scenes, you should never act like you’re drunk. You should drink and act like you’re normal. Basically, we wanted to shoot at 9, so Aamir made a plan. By 8 we’d start drinking; by 8:30-8:45 we’d have had our three-four pegs. But what happened is that the lighting conked off, so at 8:30 they said another two hours left.”
The actor added, “By the time the shot came, we thought we were completely normal, except we didn’t realise we were taking hours to deliver the lines.”
In the same conversation, Madhavan also shared a real-life 3 Idiots moment he experienced in his life. The actor, in an interesting revelation, shared a heart-to-heart conversation he had with his disappointed father. Reiterating that he was not a very good student and his parents wanted him to get married and join Tata Steel, the actor recalled the day when his father, with tears in his eyes, asked him, “What have I done wrong with you?” The Shaitaan actor remembered telling his father he did not want to do a job and would end up killing someone if he continued to sit at a table for 30 years. The actor told his father, “All I can tell you is that I won’t let you down.”
Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, 3 Idiots met with a heartwarming response after its release in 2009. Besides the three lead actors, the film also featured Kareena Kapoor Khan, Mona Singh, and Boman Irani in pivotal roles.
