Pink, Raaz Reboot, The Light Between Oceans, Nayaki: Know this week's releases

Bollywood releases Pink A story of three women and an ill-fated night where a well-connected Delhi boy tries to molest a girl, and when things go wrong, slaps a case against them, labeling them as prostitutes. The sequence of events is unfolded over a court case around the night’s events, and Bachchan plays the girls’ lawyer. Who’s in it: Amitabh Bachchan, Tapsee Pannu, Kriti Kulhari, Piyush Mishra, Angad Bedi What may work for it: Performances by Amitabh Bachchan, Tapsee Pannu and that Pink is produced by Shoojit Sircar

Raaz Reboot The fourth instalment in the Raaz series, this film is written and directed by Vikram Bhatt. While not much of the plot has been revealed, suffice it to say that this film will be as scary as the other Raaz films. The story seems to follow a similar trajectory of a woman being scorned by a man now happily married, who then comes back as a ghost to haunt the couple. Who’s in it: Emraan Hashmi and Kriti Kharbanda What may work for it: Horror, horror, horror

Hollywood releases The Light Between Oceans Tom is a war veteran who maintains a lighthouse off the shore of Australia with his wife Isabel, a woman desperate to have a baby. They adopt an abandoned infant but fate strikes again when the couple meet the child’s biological mother on the mainland. Now, Tom and Isabel must make a decision that will forever affect the lives of four people. Co-produced by Steven Spielberg, the period film is based on ML Stedman’s bestselling novel of the same name. Who’s in it: Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander and Rachel Weisz. What may work for it: The well known actors starring in the period drama.

The Shallows This week’s horror film is all about Sharks. If you are a fan of shark horror films like Jaws and Sharknado, then The Shallows is a must watch. The film stars Blake Lively as a surfer who survives a great white shark attack. The film is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra who has horror films like House of Wax and Orphan to his credit. Who’s in it: Blake Lively, Oscar Jaenada, a white shark and a seagull named Steven. What may work for it: If you like gory horror films, this is your pick. A great chance to see Blake Lively in action too.

Robinson Crusoe An animated retelling of Daniel Defoe’s classic has an exotic parrot, Tuesday, team up with Crusoe who has washed up on an island without humans. The two form an unlikely duo that embarks on adventures on the new island and Crusoe tries to save his animal friends from a war that has broken out across species. Who’s in it: Matthias Schweighöfer, Kaya Yanar and Ilka Bessin are the voiceover artists. What may work for it: It’s an animated tale for children, a classic retold with a twist.

South Indian film releases Malayalam: Oru Muthassi Gadha A family entertainer, the film highlights the conflicts of generation gap. It narrates the story of two grandmothers Leelamma and Susamma. When Leelamma’s family heads out on a trip, she is left with Susamma. The story then deals with what happens when the two old woman come together. Who’s in it: Rajini Chandy, Bhagyalakshmi, Vineeth Sreenivasan, Aparna Balamurali, Namitha Pramod, Aju Varghese, Renji Panicker, Rajeev Pillai What may work for it: The film is directed by Jude Anthany Joseph, who earlier made the hit Nivin Pauly-starrer Ohm Shanthi Oshaana.

Tamil: Nayaki Months after the Telugu film Nayaki’s release, its Tamil counterpart will be releasing on Friday. A horror comedy film it has Trisha playing the role of a 20-year old actress. Who’s in it: Trisha, Ganesh Venkatraman, Sushma Raj, V Jayaprakash What may work for it: Trisha will be seen in a different avatar in the film and she is also has a song in the film.

Pagiri The film deals with Whatsapp and how it has become integral in every smartphone users life. In fact the title, Pagiri means Whatsapp in Tamil. The film also has an underlying theme of the life of farmers." Who’s in it: Prabhu Ranaveran, Shravya What may work for it: The film is directed by National Award winner Vasanthabalan, who earlier made films like Angadi Theru and Veyyil.

Sadhuram 2 Inspired by American film Saw, Sadhuram 2 is a thriller film. The film is being touted as India’s first ‘philanthropical’ thriller as it has social consciousness elements attached to it. Who’s in it: Yog Japee, Sanam Shetty, Rohit Nair, Riaz Ansari What may work for it: It is a crowd-funded film, funded by the fans of James Wan’s Saw franchise. In a tweet James Wan himself promoted the film.

Telugu: Nirmala Convent A romantic film, it deals with how two lovers deal with the obstacles their relationship faces. Who’s in it: Roshan Meka, Shriya Sharma and Nagarjuna Akkineni What may work for it: AR Rahman’s son A. R. Ameen debuts as a singer with this film. Even Nagarjuna has lent his voice for a song.

Kannada: Just Aakasmika The Kannada film is a mix of romance, suspense and action. The film has an underlying theme of women’s safety. It also gives a message about caring for one’s neighbourhood and not overlooking issues. Who’s in it: Vinod Patil, Sanjjanaa, Tilak, Sacheen Suvarna What may work for it: It is directed by a former admaker Himayath Khan.
